Severina US Canada tour

Croatian star cancels US/Canada trip

Death threats and low interest stop Severina tour

One of the most popular Croatian daily newspapers, 24 sata, brings the shocking front-page story about Severina’s canceling her North America tour. The reasons given for this year's Croatian Eurovision Song Contest participant's cancellation is low interest, attacks on local organisers and bomb attack threats!

Last week we reported that Severina was going to start her first ever major tour in the USA and Canada. The organizer of her tour, Arx International – an experienced company in organizing similar evens with most major ex-Yugoslav artists, decided that Severina should perform in big city venues, unlike most of the other Croatian singers who usually perform in small Croatian or Catholic halls. The organizers thought she was popular enough not to attract only Croatian, but also the whole ex-Yugoslav diaspora.

This was proven to be wrong, not only because of the low interest but also due to the fact that Croatian diaspora didn’t find it ‘appropriate’ that the company led by a Serb and a Bosnian organized the shows.

The tour was supposed to start in Atlanta. Despite reports that the tour was sold out at most venues on some websites, two hours before the concert only 50 tickets were sold, from the expected 1000, and Severina decided to cancel the show. The same night they received the news that only 20 tickets were sold for her Los Angeles concert and that Croatian diaspora from Vancouver threatened to set a bomb if she appeared in Vancouver. According to 24 sata, the reason for such threat was the fact that the organizer was a Serbian/Bosnian company. Severina’s management team took the threat very seriously and immediately cancelled the show, and later the entire tour.

This news comes as a big shock. Over the last several years, Serbian singers didnt experience any inconveniences when holding the concerts in Croatia and vice versa. The same goes for Bosnian artists.  However, it seems that the ex-Yugoslav diaspora needs some more time to put the past behind.

blue alibi: In the Balkans it's ALL about the politics, and we never seem to agree on anything :) It's very hard to understand for people outside of Ex Yugoslavia, but ten years of wars and conflicts puts its traces... Anyway this is an Eurovision site, let's talk Eurovision from now on :)

Hrky Hrvatska; again you defend the faults of your country. I do not defend the mistakes my people did, there will be no reason to do so. Let's not take the Vukovar-discussion, we'll end up fighting and I don't want that. This is an eurovision site, so just let put politics aside a gain.

Serbia gave 12 POINTS to Bosnia,
10 POINTS to Croatia,
8 POINTS to Macedonia
Slovenia did not qualify for the final

Lets keep this discussion in the context of Eurovision..
Serbian televoters did not have problems voting for Yugoslav neighbours
dont start arguing its because their are Serbs in those republics!!
lets get past this and enjoy the music! :)

Besides I did NOT say " look at rep srpska and serbia how they treat their nationalists as heroes" I said there ARE nationalists HERE TOO AS IN CROATIA.

The difference between you and me hrky hrvatska: I am not denying facts. I know what serbs did as well as croatians and bosnians. you deny your own countrys war crimes and I don't do that. I am smart enough do see that nobody is perfect, not croatia, not bosnia and not serbia. or norway og great britain for that matter. every nationalist claim that their country is innocent, wich I do NOT do. Wake up and smell the turkish coffee!!!

END OF THIS STUPID DISCUSSION!!!! And nationalists have no business here!

Hrky Hrvatska; you need to read my statement again, are you illiterate? I didn't say that the nationalists in serbia are worse than the ones in croatia (the ones in croatia who are nationalists are NAZIS who hate serbs and jews) I said they were JUST AS BAD!!!!!!! don't you pick my statement apart.

Can we not have a history lesson of who did what during the war...
what does that have to do with Eurovision???

the point of Eurovision is to get past these national hatreds/rivalries and build common understanding

Sorry Hrky if I have offended you, however it is not just the BBC, but newspapers too that I get the information from. I read the Guardian, a left-wing intellectual newspaper, not rubbish like the Sun and the Daily Mail, and as far as I gather, you have a nice president and a nasty prime minister who is a raving homophobe. I read a few years ago that a British consul in Zadar realised to his horror that he was sitting opposite a big picture of a war criminal, and when he asked the mayor to remove it he said no! Apparently, the president told them to remove it, but the prime minister had the last word and said it should stay! If this is true it is scandalous! We Brits are by no means perfect, I hate Tony Bliar with a vengeance and certainly did not vote for him, and the world's worst war criminal and terrorist is George Wanker Bush!

Kristina *** [24011]

Potato Lion: Yes many croatians from Split and around are nationalists who look back at the nazi croatian state with pride. They love the war criminal Ante Gotovina, and serbs were hated there long before the war. STILL: You have the same thing in Republika Srpska. (the serbian republic in Bosnia) Manyy serbs there hate croatians and muslims, and worship their war criminals like Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadjic. Nationalists are everywhere in the EX YU and all we can do is try to fight it, and let the nationalists know how pathetic they are.

Tim: Bands like Bijelo Dugme (or at least a part of the band) made HUGE success in the US. Dino Merlin (former esc-particiapater from Bosnia & Herzegovina) also had full concert houses in the US. And many many more. The reason for that is that there are so many ex yugoslavian people living there, and they'd do anything to see their artists. Severina would also have huge success if her croatian fans (it seems as if the biggest part of them are nationalists) boycottet their concert.

The concert was never meant to be for the AMERICAN population but the EXYU population in the USA :)

It's amazing that anyone seriously thinks that they can sell tickets to appear in the US. I am sure no one there has every heard of her, and I am having trouble remembering who she is. ESC is great for one night per year, but you cannot compare most who compete with world artists!

haha it's completely unlogical. The nationalists actually don't win anything, they lose! they don't get to see Severina! What are they trying to achieve??

i just read some fresh news: Severina was boycott with all croatian clubs, caffe's and croatian radio in New York where their chief openly didn't want to have anything with Severina because Arx International company is Serbian one...

sad... :(

JA Hrvatska [25019]
Mon 20 Nov 2006 15:26:50

well, it's sad, true... i just wanted to be clear why was so low interest for concerts - because of boycott :)

Kristina *** [24011]
Mon 20 Nov 2006 15:16:00

well that was exactly my point, they'd rather want to boycott serbs than watch their popstar sing. if you're so stupid to boycott the concert just because the organisators isn't from your country, you're just the lowest of the low and they get what they deserve: nothing. Poor Severina. Poor nationalists.

JA Hrvatska [25019]
Mon 20 Nov 2006 15:09:18

well, actually, [b]low interest was because Croats boycott concerts because it was organized by serbs. [b]it is not low interest because it is low, if u understand what i want to say.

Well croatian nationalists stop Severinas tour, strange since she's croatian herself. This is sad, and I'm sad that people can't stop hating eachother like this, it seriously does not make things better, OR make the world a better place!!! PEACE :)
