Top ten abroad for Zdob si zdub
Boonika wins over Denmark
The unforgettable Boonika bate doba (Grannie beats the drum) is currently sitting at position ten in the Danish singles charts, as compiled by IFPI Danmark.
Chart success abroad is a feat that many Eurovision artists aspire to, but few achieve, including the winners themselves in some cases. Zdob si zdub have achieved just that, though with more than a year since their appearance in Kyiv, the achievement is quite impressive. Even the cynics may start to admit the opportunities for exposure that the Eurovision Song Contest can offer to artists from countries which would otherwise go unnoticed.

I am so surprised that Zdob si Zdub are popular back again in Denmark wih that old song. This group is however quite popular for their ethno-rock / pop-rock all over Eastern Europe. Well, I guess my country has some other talents than just O-Zone with Dragostea din Tei. For those of you who said Granny was wearing a Romanian folk costume - you are wrong. She was wearing Moldavian folk costume.
For those of you who don't know: in Moldavia we speak Romanian and often people think we are Romanians, etc, but it's not so. It's just like Belgium and Netherlands (for Dutch language example). In Moldavia we also have three (four total) other languages: Ukrainian, Russian and Gagauz.
The best talent of all times of Moldavian origin is SOFIA ROTARU. She is the top singer in all of the former USSR. To give you the picture: mix Madonna, Shania Twain, Kylie Minogue and Celine Dion, you'll get the beautiful Sofia Rotaru and her unforgettable voice. She sings in Russian, Ukrainian and Romanian. I wish she sang in English. She did have some songs in German earlier.
There is also Maria Biesu, Opera singer, Cio Cio San winner in Japan.
P.S. Sunloverz Shine On rock!!!
all i can say about baby doll's performance in 1991 and her "amazing" song is: OOOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!! it's the same with swiss entry from 2004. i mean when you see something like that you just ask yourself and everyone around you: "is this for real or what!!?????" some things you just can't understand!! anyway, zdob si zdub, i like their song. cool song, original and interesting stage performance. niceeee.
moldova, my number one in 2005!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Danish people you know...
'Zdob si zdub' was on Roskilde Festival this year, that's why the big interest now.
Well done Zdob si Zdub, that means people will still remember you from one year on.
Incredible achievement from an act that was sooo last year.
I liked your song and your 'Boonika' was cool.
Good luck to your future further successes, you deserve it.
*LOL*...How funny is THAT????...
Moldova's granny is something people will remeber more than the winner that year because it was so entertaining, however the most annoying and therefore memorable thing ever from eurovision has to be greece's entry in 2002 the password song every body remembers that
@ Neal Harris,
Baby Doll is my neighbour. Yes, she's great! And Moldova's granny was great too.
To Dragan - Sorry I was joking, Baby Doll isn't in the UK charts. :-(
To Zazou - Hello :-)
i dont like moldova this year!
MOLDOVA WAS SURPRISE THAT WAS MOUST ORIGINAL AND GRANNY WAS GREAT IDEA BRAVO FOR MOLDOVA UNFORTUNATLLY THIS YEAR THEY SEND IT VERY LIGHT SONG PITTY ... WHO KNOWS MAYBE IN HELSINKI THEY LL HAVE BETTER SONG ( hope so)
hehehe brazil is great song
@ Neal Harris
Do you mean Baby Doll who represented Yugoslavia in 1991 or someone else?
Just checked and Baby Doll is currently #24 in the UK charts! She's on Top of the Pops this week so set your videos..
;-) hehe
I didn't like the song, but I'm glad that a Eurovision song makes the charts. I liked "Jokero" from the start though (the song from the Rumanian NF) and I predict a big (late)summer hit in Europe.
Lordi is also doing very well in some countries (like Switzerland) as well as Texas Lightning.
It seems that in a lot of countries (like in the NL) Eurovision is not "cool". Especially the DJ's are to blame about that. They should play more Eurovision songs. Like the Ukrainian song (Show me your love): that should be a hitsong all over the world !
how strange. can any Danes explain its sudden (very late) popularity? I see Bamses Venner (ESC 1980) are at no. 7 in the same chart...
Jokero by Akcent from Romanian NF is becoming a hit in the Netherlands, climbing from 38 to 22 in the second week in the Top 40. Last week they were Dancesmash on one of our most popular radiostations Radio 538, that means they played it every 2 or 3 hours.
all this shows that the average quality of ESC Songs is going up, but the record companies are still to negative about promoting an ESC song. That's why a lot of potential international hits from ESC do not see the light of day. No promotion and no faith in the songs. Hope this is gonna change. Lordi is number 2 in Austria, a country that did not even participate in ESC 2006. A lot of this years song woudl easily become a europewide hit, if they had the airplay. MAybe the MP3 download commercial databases might help, cause people can download what they like, and not what the record companies offering in their local.
Hope next years winner will be a smash. ESC needs it to stay in the focus.
release it in the UK please
Marvellous! This was my favourite entry from last year; they were fabulous live, and Grandma even managed to eclipse the splendid Angelica Agurbash. I say well done Denmark and poop poop to all those who slag off Zdob si zdub.
i like them!they were great.
It should have won, it was a great song and act, better then watever did win that yr. I wish they would release it here if it had a funny video it'd shoot to the top of the charts
An old woman beating a drum was supposed to be funny. Thank god this song didn't win. It was mostly noise and shouting, and very very overrated.
What?!
How can they hit a year after the contest, and then even in my own country?!
Bwaaaah...
Stupid song, from a very first day it appeared!
