After Georgia...

'No Czech Republic in Athens'

The Czech Republic will not participate in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens. Eurovision Song Contest fanclub OGAE Germany wrote that on its website. Earlier this week, Georgian broadcaster GTVR admitted the necessary budget could not be found.
Last year, the Czech broadcaster had the intention to enter the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest. At the end, CT decided not to come to Kyiv. The Czech public broadcaster considers it as a significant disadvantage that a Czech representative would have to enter the semifinal, without having the assurance of an attractive Saturday night programme. Georgia Earlier this week, esckaz.com reported that Georgia cannot find the necessary sponsor budget to make a debute in Athens. Only a day after stating "it might be too early to rule out Georgia's participation for the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest entirely", which also counts for the Czech decision to stay home in 2006, sources claim that Georgian television actually found the necessary sponsors, but that the broadcaster does not want to make any decisions before the funds actually arrived. Armenia, Bulgaria and Austria Armenia is eager to join the Eurovision Song Contest family in 2006. For the moment, their entrance depends on the decision of the European Broadcasting Union whether they agree or not. In Bulgaria, the public broadcaster openly doubts if another Eurovision Song Contest participation would make sense. In Kyiv, Kaffe's Lorraine didn't manage to qualify for the final. Earlier this summer, Austrian broadcaster ORF announced to turn its back to the Eurovision Song Contest and not to subscribe for Athens 2006.

U turn for Austria and Italy, Luxembourg and Slovakia in ESC 2006. Italy should join with the Big 4 nations.

@ Moray, do you suffer of a short, middle and long-term memory lost ? I could find an anti-example to every bottom-2 position we had !

If the French had no entry at Eurovision, who would be there to finish second last? No offence, but it's starting to seem like a placing especially reserved for France.

WESTERN SAMOA
ANY OTHER PART OF SAMOA

this was the best :) :) :) :) couldn't stop myself from laughing during 2 minutes !

about France, don't you know you have stubborn neighbours ? If France withdraws it's certainly not because of our miserable 23th position - with was proportional to the lack of taste miss Ortal had that night with her pingwin-dress and the poor choregraphy (can we really call this a choregraphy ?!). No honestly I don't believe France will withdraw, but french are definitly not likely to get interested in ESC with the poor performances and singers we present -as far as I'm concerned, I like our entries (as songs) , though. France will participate again and again, wishing every year to have found the new Natasha St Pier that will give more credibility to ESC through the eyes of the dirty-stupid frogs we are !

my best regards to her royal lowness Queen Camilla. what do you think about willy as an assistant in a bank ?!

@ Queen Camilla

I thought some fool would point that out but I didn't think it would be you Queen Camilla. West Freesia is part of Netherlands and Heligoland is part of Germany but, like the Scilly Isles I just thought they sounded funny. And anyway, Crna Gora is part of Serbia and Crna Gora but they were under some illusion last year that they were independent. I was just having fun with the issue, your royal lowness...

Queen Camilla of England [24899]
Mon 10 Oct 2005 13:50:04

@ Molly
Are the Scilly Isles not part of the UK ? In fact I'll think you'll find that they are administered by Cornwall County Council and therefore fall under the juristiction of the BBC...
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

@ Molly Parton: Interesting list. As for Monaco, the government was - reluctantly - talked into sending a song in 2004 (for "publicity purposes" ;). In spite of its failure, they decided to give it another go this year. But they made it clear that if they didn't make it to the final in their second attempt, there would be no third one. No kidding.

@ Chronis

Yeah - Norway needs all the free points it can get. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha aha. A-Ha. There's a good idea to represent Norway. They must be desperate enough by now...

@ Euro Maniac

Thanks for the truly disturbing news about the spread of Babic. 10 different finals you say? Hmmm. Interesting. Perhaps Babic could do all the entries and compete against himself. Then Croatia could give all their votes from 1 to 12 to Croatia and they'd even have to not vote for Croatia regarding 12 other songs because Babic would be doing them all. What a wonderful thought. He could be in all the videos too! I know we are straying off the fascinating piece of news that there is NO CZECH REPUBLIC IN ATHENS, but let's face it, it ain't much in the way of news. As a late news item, I can exclusively reveal that the following countries and territories have also made a shocking decision NOT to be present in Athens:

ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
WEST FREESIA
TOGO
SOMALILAND
HELIGOLAND
BECHUANALAND
FORMOSA
TIBET
WESTERN SAMOA
ANY OTHER PART OF SAMOA
PUERTO RICO
SOUTH GEORGIA AND DEPENDENCIES
SCILLY ISLES
BHUTAN
CHILEAN ANTARCTIC TERRITORY
CHAD (THOUGH THEY WILL BE INVITED IF BULGARIA WITHDRAWS)
MONACO (ONLY KIDDING)
SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE
NAURU
AND FINALLY
FRANCE (QUITE LIKELY, I THINK)

@ Political and Neighbourly bloc voting,

Why Germany? Quite opposite, there still some ethin Germans in the Czech Republic, they would have given some pts to Germany.

The Czech Republic would have also received some pts from Croatia. There are near 20 000 ethnic Czechs in northern part of Croatia.

Moray James [22319]

How about two semifinals on the radio? That would cut down on the entries which only get through due to the visual performance, leaving good quality songs for the final meaning a better quality contest.

Without a doubt we have to reconsider the BIG 4 and the semi-finals.
Obviously we have to protect the Grand final on a Saturday night, but with so many countries I really think that a Wednesday or Thursday semi-final isn't working.
Could we split into groups like Euro 2006 soccer?
Five groups of 8 with top three in each group qualifying?
Is this unthinkable?

NRK is considering having one of his songs in their final next year, because if it wins it will give Norway many "free" points from the Balkans. (Euro Maniac)

Oh c'mon! It will get pts from Croatia only not Balkans! Babic is not famous in Balkans!!

Euro Maniac [23134]

Molly Parton wrote "It will end up with fans writing the songs and singing them too in some cases (see Andre Babic for example)."

For your information, Andrej Babic has entered at least ten different national final selections, even in Scandinavia. NRK is considering having one of his songs in their final next year, because if it wins it will give Norway many "free" points from the Balkans.

If some countries need a big show for saturday night, why not 3 saturdays in May for the ESC: two semifinals + the grand final

@ stephane

A bilingual entray actually won in 2004. And an entry completely not in English came close to winning both in 04 and 05!

Molly Parton [29330]

@ Stephane

So no Czech Republic. They are not so much pulling out as never having pulled in in the first place. What kind of news is that? They haven't been in it for 50 years so what's another year?

Stephane - why are all your faves winners?? The trouble with the orchestra is that it costs far too much money and most of the artists don't want it anyway. The BBC used most of their money for the orchestra and while it's great in the hall, it doesn't really matter much for the viewer. Plus, in Oslo the musicians threatened a strike which nearly caused the cancellation of the contest so that was the death knell for the orchestra really.

France, Spain, Monaco, Andorra, Portugal, Belgium didn't do well because either the songs were bad (France, Portugal, Spain, Monaco, Belgium) or the performance was not good enough (Andorra). Monaco was a good performer though. The reason songs in English keep winning is because everyone keeps entering songs in English. Plus too many of the French entries are the same. You know you are going to get the big ballad with the big build up. They need to do something different.

@ Daniel - you are forgetting Trio Bulgarka. They are good!

@ Ivona - I agree that Aleksandr is a very unapproachable man.

@ Benjamin - the UK almost withdrew for good in 1995.

@ John - the BBC won't withdraw in 2006 but I agree that the contest has completely lost it's way. The fact that that Macedonian idiot qualified for the final leaving people who could actually perform (Selma, Glennis, Ivan & Delfin etc) out of it means that those people will NEVER enter again and it puts off decent contestants from entering. It will end up with fans writing the songs and singing them too in some cases (see Andre Babic for example). In the end, the contest will be like one of those Eurovision fan conventions, a parody of itself with no decent artists left in it. There are few enough already. Even Chiara looked hacked off thist year outside her hotel the morning afterwards.

@ Sam - Liechtenstein and San Marino? You ARE joking? What about Vatican City? I'm sure that new pope could do something in German.

I think the ESC should cut down, if not with the amount of countries taking part, then the voting. For instance, if the non-qualifiers only give 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12 points in the final?

Whatever ... [29486]
Sat 8 Oct 2005 01:05:10

CZECH REPUBLIC pulling out ... Too bad!

What's going on? Honestly, your songwriters and performers would have come up with a great song to represent your country and they are not even going to be given a chance!

At least, ARMENIA will be welcomed at the Athens 2006 ESC -- and it will be their first time (I think!).

AUSTRIA (!!!!) withdrew earlier this summer,
now GEORGIA (!) will not subscribe for Athens 2006 (it would have been their first time) ...
So, won't you reconsider?

You must participate in this major European event!

... et ITALIA RITORNO, per favore!!!!

Good! I prefer Lebanon or Italy if it's possible.I hope Bulgaria to participate,It's a pity to withdraw because their first entry didn't qualify to the final! They should try again!
