Outvotes Dima and Leona
Shiri Maimon places third in MTV Europe Music Awards
The 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards took place on 6th November at the Liverpool Echo Arena in the UK and was hosted by Katy Perry in the Arena and Perez Hilton in the official online coverage. Two Eurostars were nominated for Europe's Favourite Act this year, Russian Eurovision Song Contest winner Dima Bilan and Shiri Maimon who competed for Israel in 2005.
The winner of the category was Turkish star Emre Aydın, who also beat next year's Turkish representative in the Eurovision Song Contest, Hadise, in the local competition for Best Turkish Act. Shiri placed third among the five nominees, followed by Dima Bilan and Leona Lewis (the exact order of the last two places has not yet been announced).

EMA gala was awesome this year, don't undrestand all this fuss around here, its obvious only big names are invited so whats the deal ?!
the only weak point was undoubtedly this fugly, fat tramp pigez
on the other hand Katy Perry's freaking awesome!
@ Susan: nr. 2 was Finley from Italy.
A quick read of the esc summary reminded me of Math questions in school. If Shiri was third, Emrye beat Hadise in a Turkish competition and came in first palce, Dima was 4/5 with Leona, then who came in second place? Or did we not mention that because it was way more fun to say everything backwards?
Ok, now point out to me that it's RIGHT THERE and I am indeed dumb as toast.
The worst thing about the show was that absolutely EVERYTHING was about Obama. It is bad enough that singers and groups from continental Europe were with the exception of Tokio Hotel nearly completely ignored. But to turn a EUROPEAN music award show into an after vote celebration orgy was really the biggest shame.
Yes, as everyone's pointing out, the MTV "Europe" awards are a complete joke. They have nothing to do with Europe - they're just a promotional tool for the multi-million dollar Anglo-American pop industry.
The Anglo-American pop industry is a huge marketing behemoth. This is why European songs don't chart in the UK or US, and in many cases not outside their own country - they don't have the finances, marketing, promotion, or corporational backing to compete with the US/UK giants. Whether I'm in the Alps, the Balkans or the fjords, I can turn on the radio and be sure to hear 50 Cent, Katy Perry, Chris Brown, Britney and co, or whoever's being promoted at the moment. This is why - like in France - radio stations need quotas. The rest of Europe needs to look to France much more in how to protect itself against Anglo-American "soft" cultural imperialism and develop a strong, integrated music industry of its own.
This is the true potential of Eurovision - to bring REAL contemporary European music to the fore.
I wanted Dima to win - he is much better than the others
I agree with W S, MTV europe awards are a bit of a joke really
It is not as if the EMA is agains eastern Europe. The EMA is agains anything not British and American and English speaking. Look at the hosts. When it was held in Rotterdam, Ronan Keating was the host. But Ronan was also the host in Dublin. With the big exception of Tokio Hotel all of Europe outside the British isles was ignored. Countries like France and Spain have a huge local music scene. Those scenes are equally ignored as the music scene of Greece and Serbia.
listen guys ! MTV awards isn't that popular anymore in many parts of europe! because every country now has its on big music channel! every country! believe me here in belgium Emre nobody knows Emre! Leona Lewis was in almost all country's number one so are these awards important?
Rick Astley voted best act ever??? are so serious?
Britney best albuM????
This is a joke
Dear Emma
the song of Shiri was transmited only in Israel.
you will get the chance to see it on youtube in few days.
it was excelant preformance. pitty she sang on the small stage and not on the big one live to all Europe.
but next year belive me, this girl Shiri rocks!!! she will do it big time.
i saw the EMAs it was brilliant but i was disappointed they didnt show the whole songs i wanted to hear shiri maimons song
Mina
"And what does that show about the UK taste? LOOOOOOOOOOL (joke )"
lollll that may be a joke but it is a very good point!! The one time a non winning esc song does well in our charts, its a glitter-ball-dressed ukrainian transvestite!! And of our songs, in recent years the act to chart the best was Scooch, they even charted better than Jessica Garlick!!
But what can you expect from a funny little island where people drink tea?! lol
and only reason why I mentioned Sakis is because a certain Mina (my best friend here) teases me with her little jokes and that's why I mentioned Sakis.
Heyyyyyyyyy, Leona isn't from Belgium! I've never teased you about Ishtar (although I could considering the girl looked like she had overdosed on strawberries..LOL).
I can't remember the last time a eastern european act made a proper impact on the UK charts (excluding Verka who got to something like 25)
And what does that show about the UK taste? LOOOOOOOOOOL (joke
)
Yes, MTV Europe is really shite. It's 90% American,
9.00% British/Ireland, and 1% 'Rest Of Europe', completley insignificant.
That's why we still need Eurovision, guys!!!!
Btw I forgot to mention!
"Now that you're gone" (the song that Shiri performed) is amazing!!!
Its similar to Elena Paparizous "teardrops" but "now that you're gone" is even better than that
omg!!!!!!!
grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!
i cant belive that show! its the EUROPEAN music awards, and then the only time where the winner has to be european, they spend 30secs announcign the result, and then when the regional act performs, they onyl do it in their country
this is terrible! i wish they would scrap it
And another thing . . .
MTV europe awards arent really that european at all apart from the fact that it was hosted in europe! Both presenters were american and the majority of the winners were american.
And for those confused as to where Shiri was . .
Basically she was performing as one of quite a few "regional performances" that were only broadcast in their relevant countries, eg Shiris performance was only broadcast in Israel by the looks of things,
See this: http://en.wikipedia.(...)al_Acts_Performances
"THe thing is my friend, that when you live in Western Europe, you do not hear a lot about the Eastern European music scene."
That is true (unfortunately) I can't remember the last time a eastern european act made a proper impact on the UK charts (excluding Verka who got to something like 25), which is a shame because eastern europe (and western) does produce some great music, it just isn't recognised as much because at the moment our markets are dominated by american music.
@ Kevin Knight
I think that in every country the national act winner is shown. The program is in this regard different in each country.
im getting confused now, when abouts did shiri perform in the show? or any other europeans for that matter
I was there in the stadium, and what is shown there was a little different to what was shown on TV, I guess so they can "localise" it.
Shiri's performance was great, as always, but the production values were very different to examples as The Killers, Kanye West, ect.
There were more performances performed live which were not shown on the main MTV broadcast.
@ cpbija 89
"no its not obvious, its a clear ignoring Eastern music because we didn't Americanize that much like Western Europe did."
Oh, please!!! Don't take the MTV Europe Music Awards serious. Just ignore it. It is a complete joke for various reasons.
1. MTV doesn't really still deserve the description as a music channel. Have you watched lately what rubbish they are showing? A lot has absolutely NOTHING to do anymore with music.
2. The nominations were extremely biased. How can anyone be surprised that USA and UK artists dominated, when they make the most part of the nominees?
3. The voting itself is a joke. Naturally big international singers, who sing nearly always in English, has the biggest chances. National stars from other countries, who don't sing in English, are usually NOT international stars so not so many people know them and could vote for them. The MTV Europe Music Awards are NOT a "Who made the best song, best music video, ... awards show", it is a "Who has the most fans worldwide which has nothing better to do than go to the stupid MTV internet site and vote there awards show". The QUALITY of the songs are not very important. Britney Spears has even with a really BAD song higher chances to win an award than the biggest polish, spanish, austrian singer.
Then you have to add to that, that such an internet voting can easily be manipulated. There are programs which vote thousand of times automatically.
Even without such technical manipulations, it is easy for big internet sites to influence such votings. If a popular fansite publish an article which says that everyone should vote for their idol with links to the voting site and then those fans propagate this news on other internet sites, they can easily influence the result. When fans of other singers aren't mobilize the same way, the result will be clear.
By the way have you heard who won the BEST ACT EVER award? It was Rick Astley with "Never Going To Give You Up". Obviously the fans of Rickrolling were having A LOT OF fun with making the MTV voting completely ludicrous.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rickrolled
4. The point you make about Western Europe music versus Eastern Europe music in regards to the MTV Awards is not really true. It is USA and UK music against the music of the rest of the world, including of course all other European countries. Do you see huge amount of singers from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, ... and other western European countries winning in the last years? They are very seldom winning awards with the exception of the "Europe's Favourite Act category", where they don't face concurrence from US singers. Russia, Serbia, Poland, ... are really not less successful than Spain, Italy, France, ... All their national stars, especially those who don't sing in English, have no chance at all. Their stars has to be famous at best worldwide or at least in the whole of Europe and the USA to have a chance like Tokio Hotel did have this year. A huge amount of teenager fans "which has nothing better to do with their time than visiting fansite, propagate news about the voting and providing links to the stupid MTV voting site and then VOTE in huge masses" is also always helping. But Tokio Hotel is really only the exception of the rule that nearly always USA and UK stars are winning the MTV Europe Music awards. They are often also the only ones who get even nominated.
i was watching a webcast on the mtv website, and there was no appearence of her, and after katy perry sang hot n cold at the end of the show, it cut off
I guess Shiri's performence was aired only by MTV in Israel? is it possible? did you not see it?
anyway for those who didnt catch it, here it is :-)
http://uk.youtube.co(...)/watch?v=IuY0MsHwdD8
the awards were awful
the whole thing was dominated by america and obama
the only real europeans mentioned were the british
perez hilton!!!! omg he was furious when tokio hotel won (this is the european awards not the american ones!) then dissed them all night, and claimed that europeans only voted for europeans! omg!
and what happened to shiri performing?
i am 100% definatley not watching next year, unless it becomes a european awards show, the only thing european about it was the fact it was in the uk, they might as well host it in america next time!
Cpbija 89,
Well if you pull that line than we all come from Adam and Eve.... THe thing is my friend, that when you live in Western Europe, you do not hear a lot about the Eastern European music scene. Actually the only time I hear something is during Eurosong. I am not an MTV watchers/fan, do not vote,.... and don't have a clue why they always orginise it in Western Europe. You should ask the organisers. Maybe because all the sponsors are Western European,...I really do not have a clue
