Ireland: "We will participate at Eurovision 2009"

RT, the Irish broadcaster confirmed today to esctoday.com, that Ireland will participate at Eurovision 2009 to be staged in Moscow, Russia in May, although they are not ready to announce any details about the way in which their entry will be selected yet.

Speculation since Dustin the Turkey's representation at Eurovision 2008 in Belgrade last May, that Ireland may pull out of the comeptition over the controversial act peaked after the failure of the puppet to progress from the Eurovision Song Contest semi-final.

Since then RTÉ remained tight lipped if Ireland would participate at Moscow in 2009. However today, RTÉ confirmed to esctoday.com that Ireland will be competing at Eurovision 2009.

On the other hand, a selection format to find next year's representative(s) has not been announced yet. But esctoday.com has been told that to expect a departure from the selection process than in recent years.

thanks,i have expressed my intrest.she is a great singer and performer.the Irish public were stupid to go with the f**k**g Turkey.she wouldhave made the top 3 if not have won.this year should be an internal selection, with music executives as a jury.not the public.we want Eurovision, back in it's home city of Baile ath Claith(Dublin)and now that the point, has been transformed in to the 02,the time is right.come RTE,get your ass working.

Ireland, need to take the contest seriously once again.i agree Leona Daly, would made the top5 in Belgrade, and "Double croos my heart" was a great Eurosong, but as stated before poor Donal,is no Johnny Logan.maybe thats it get Mr Logan,to write a song and Leona Daly, sing it,now that sounds like a winning formula.

The guys over on All Kinds Of Everything are say that Ireland will use the sames process as Spain last year and maybe semifinals as well. Does anyone know more?

It can be the music, it can be the performer (just like you found Dima awful and Marija great and for me it was the opposite), it can be lots of reasons.

To be honest... I liked neither of them... but to my opinion Marija had a rather good voice, nothing more nothing less.
Enough about Dustin though. The Past is the past and can't be changed, nor does it need to be defended or attacked any longer. Ireland has decided to participate in 2009, so that's where my attention will go from now on.

Marija was rubbish

At least Marija could song and didn't just gain point on squirming half naked on the floor.

I wasn't comparing the 2 Muireanne..you saw it that way..I saw it in a different way (naturally, since I couldn't stand Molitva and I loved Believe..lol)...the thing is that it doesn't matter how 'similar' 2 songs are (ballads or joke entries or pop), for some reason some people will like the one and not the other...same as with Verka and Dustin. It can be the music, it can be the performer (just like you found Dima awful and Marija great and for me it was the opposite), it can be lots of reasons.

And some people didn't like Believe which was a ballad but the same people loved Molitva which was also a ballad..

@ drusus

I agree Armenia and Israel will be in Moscow 99% sure, but I'm not so sure about Lithuania and Poland.
Obviously, Hungary, Montenegro and San Marino are the countries with the highest risk of withdrawal.

@ brenton

FYROM TV won't withdraw. Rumours about bankruptcy were simply speculation (the same for Ukraine). Both TVs are preparing their NFs. You can read all the references about the confirmations of the 36 countries in the English Wiki page about ESC 2009.

Think there's a slight difference between a mad drag queen and a person with his hand up a plastic puppet. At least Verka was toungue-in-cheek, Ireland was just sticking their middle finger up att ESC which didn't pay off. Hope they return to their normal selves in 2009.

people complain about irelands turkey.. but at the same time most people loves ukraines verka serduchka who was a similar act... hmm.. strange...

And some people didn't like Believe which was a ballad but the same people loved Molitva which was also a ballad..do you see how wrong the comparison is?
Just because 2 songs belong to the same kind (ballads, joke entries, dancing songs, schlager and so on) doesn't mean that people have to like them both.

It is absolutely necessary to have Ireland in the Contest, even more than Italy.

In Eurovision 2008, I hoped Ireland to pass to the final. It was a curious show never seen before. It was nice, so I wanted to see it in the final, but it couldn't be. Hope this year Ireland won't send a boring BORING ballad... It sucks!!! No ballads, please!!!

@Willox
its a SHAME to compare something like a bird which most didnt even anderstand what it was saying with Verka(which had success at alot of countries....the music was catchy and all the idea with his mother WAS funny).
Anyway these are opinions...!

Absolutely Willox Willox, well said.

I am pretty postive that had an ex Societ or Yugoslav nation sent Dustin to Belgrade, it would have probably progressed to the final and reached a very respectable place.

Irelande Douze Points was a desprate and unfunny attempt that spectacually failed at what it tried to be.

Oh really? Strange... many people don't have that impression about it.
It wasn't a good song (wasn't meant to be that either in the first place), the turkey couldn't sing (who ever said he could anyway) and it was rather a mocking protest than it ever was meant to be a joke. Some people understood that, the majority didn't... ok, but it didn't fail spreading a message it was supposed to spread.
Next year (with a bit of luck) Ireland most likely WILL send something way different from the previous act. We did learn, but obviously you still didn't.

Hopefully Ireland will learn from this mistake and send somthing proper.

Irelande Douze Points was a desprate and unfunny attempt that spectacually failed at what it tried to be. Especally at three minutes. See that guy near the front row with the inflatable hammer? Maybe he could of threw it at them! (only joking)

if they just sent a big voiced female vocalist then we'd be hosting it in 2010! plain and simple - no gimmicks, just get in there, sing like a diva and get off the stage. leave an impact in Europes eyes! (but in a good way!!!)

Lol Ireland should send either U2, The Corrs, Enya, Sinead O'Connor or Westlife...maybe Bewitched...

Well said Emma.... I hated all the ipinions over here anyway of people who point fingers to a certain country... Phrases like, Ireland shame shame shame....How could you....entries like Dusty harm the festival... this kind of entries is the end of the festival... NO DIASPORA CHEATING COUNTRIES ARE THE END OF THE FESTIVAL. BIAS VOTING IN GENERAL.......
