Sweden: 28 song titles and authors revealed

The Swedish broadcaster SVT has just announced the 28 songs that have been selected to take part in the four heats of Melodifestivalen in 2009 and their authors. From the four heats and a fifth second chance round 10 songs will qualify to battle it out in the Swedish final at Stockholm's Globen 14 March, 2009. An 11th song will also be selected by an international jury amongst the non-qualifiers from the heats to compete to be the Swedish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow in May. Even if speculation on the eventual artists will be rife in the coming weeks, the names will only be confirmed later. According to the contest rules whoever sings on the demo track sent to SVT will have to be available also to perform in the contest, but the final decision will rest with the broadcaster. A record total of 3440 songs were submitted to SVT this year.

4 wild cards will be added to the 28 songs later, making the total of songs to 32. 8 songs will compete in each heat. As a new element the duels used previously in the Second chance round will feature already in each heat. Of the five songs, that after the first round of voting go through to the second round of voting, the song with the biggest number of votes will face the one in fourth place in a sing-off, and numbers two and three will similarly face each other. The winner of each sing-off will go directly to the final in Globen, whereas the loser will get another try in the Second chance round.

A few other changes have been introduced to Melodifestivalen rules next year, and now a total of 8 people will be allowed on stage. The backing vocals are also allowed now to be pre-recorded during the Swedish selection process, but will have to be completely live in the Eurovision Song Contest in May like before. Also, the number of performers in Moscow will be limited to six according to long-standing Eurovision Song Contest rules. The international jury will also work alongside the 11 regional juries in all the heats. The results in all rounds will be decided by a combination of jury votes and televoting.

@Max Raspail: You got that right on Molly Sandén! She represented Sweden in JESC in 2006 in Bucharest, Romania and she came 3rd with: Det finaste någon kan få

Ooouuh - Amy Diamond again...

Thumbs up - concerning the artists - for Elin Lanto, Sarah Dawn Finer, Linda Bengtzing (a big PLUS that she sings in Swedish again), Caroline af Ugglas, Ola, Emilia and BWO...

Molly Sandén? Didn't she represent Sweden in the JESC? And do I remember it right that she did a quite good job there?

I'm part English too, that doesn't make me an awesome singer!!!
She was like the secret love child of Lena Zavaroni....

Jonny
At least Friend's 2002 entry was better than the one they competed with in 2000. They participated three years in a row. And the girls made an attempt in 2004 :D What do you think:

Euro Sheep
Well, Carina is Kristian's partner.
I will probably try to get tickets for the dress rehearsal as usual. The thing is that I leave home early in the morning and the tickets sell out quickly. Last year I booked my tickets the minute they started selling them in the morning. I will help you if I can ;)

Sweden did an amazing job of hosting in 2000, so I would love to see Kattis in that role again! :) I read somewhere that Kristian actually said Carina Berg should host - but that might be my bad Swedish! :D

If E.M.D. were given a wildcard then it would just be even more impossible to predict the winner! And I had no idea that Elin Lanto was Brolle's girlfriend! It's true, you learn something new everyday! :P

Are you going to try and tickets again this year? I would be so grateful if you could help me :)

I think Barry was a member of the MF jury last year too :)

Euro Sheep
Thanks for the link. It also says in Aftonbladet that Kattis Ahlström may be the new presenter (she co-hosted ESC in 2000).
I think one of the wildcards will be E.M.D. :) I read that Brolle was asked to sing "Killing me tenderly" but said no as he's got a role in the Buddy Holly musical. Now it seems that his gf Elin Lanto will sing it instead.

Well I thought Friends second try wasn't that great. Fame were good in 2004 but I prefer their 2003 effort, sorry ;)

I know, that's so strange how once wasn't enough for them!!! Haha :D but I think it was back in the days when there were way less entries submitted, so theirs must have been the best!

What did you think of the entries? I absolutely love Fame's second try, it's even better than their ESC song!

Thanks so much for the list from expressen!!!!

"The jury who selected this years songs were as follows: . . . . .
Barry Viniker, 29, managing director for Esctoday.com"
Well, if Sweden send a crap song this year (very unlikely I know!) then we know who to blame! :P lol

Euro Sheep
Thats a shame, I will miss Sanna :( Btw I was looking at a few MF videos and I found out that Afro-Dite, Friends and Fame all participated in MF the year after they went to eurovision, is it me, or is it a bit weird that the person who won it the previous year is trying again!? :) :S

i'm hoping for Shirley Clamp! Sonja would be nice too.

Euro Sheep a.k.a. SexyWool [52112]
Wed 15 Oct 2008 20:37:47

Jonny
:( I don't think Sanna would be allowed to compete this year - I read there was a rule which stated that an artist can't compete 3 times in a row as the same act. Hence, that's why Andreas Johnson sold his soul to Carola to perform in 2008!

But Sibel should be there again!!! If Ola is, then she should be!!!

Florian
The students are there because they write in to SVT and Christer picks a few to be on the jury to get a good mix of opinions.

Morten Kjems
What is the matter with Amy? She's awesome!!! and part-English :D

Stockholm Calling
Wherefore art thou!? :D haha, who do you think will be the jokers? I have money on E.M.D., Brolle and Lotta Engberg if the list on Aftonbladet is anything to go by!

Jonny K. [46850]
Wed 15 Oct 2008 20:31:37

Euro Sheep
If those were the singers then it would definitely be a dream Melodifestivalen :D, only Sanna & Sibel would be missing though :(

Florian
Maybe they were trying to give Melodifestival a more youthful appeal. I think that might be what all these changes are about, more backing singers, recorded backing vocals, it all looks to me as if SVT is trying to modernise the show to probably appeal to a younger aud!ence aswell :) And I suppose Students are more likely to pick songs that would appeal to a younger age range ;) Just a thought :)

The Isle of Wight is pretty good :) And the ferry which goes from the Isle to the mainland goes to Portsmouth, which is also pretty good and close to Emsworth :) Although apparently its one of the most expensive ferry crossings in Britain :S
And thats a good society to be a member of btw! ;)

I just found out that Linda Bengtzing is singing the demo version of "Jag tror på oss" and the team who wrote this song also wrote "Jag ljuger så bra" :) Maybe this means that Linda will participate in MF.

Sorry Richard, of course it's The Isle of Wight. I must have been tired last night :)

I am really happy for Mans Zelmerlow and the fact that three songs of Fredrik Kempe made it :) I am pretty sure we will see Alcazar performing "Stay the night" (since Andreas Lundstedt and Lina Hadlund are the authors), BWO performing "It's my life" (by Alexandar Bard and it sounds something like BWO would perform), Mans Zelmerlow performing "Hope & Glory" and I'm really glad for all three performes taking part :)
