Stars sing in tears for Toše
More than 30 acts performed for four hours at the concert named “We love you too, Toše”, which was organised by Toše’s manager Liljana Petrović and the singer’s own Foundation. The concert was broadcast live on television in ten countries.
Performers included Tony Cetinski, who represented Croatia at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest and who recorded a duet with Toše. Tony described his throat being “frozen by powerful emotions”, although he managed to sing in honour of his late friend.
Former Dora runner-up, Nina Badrić performed a moving song called Nesanica (Insomnia) and had the whole audience singing along with her. Tragically, Nina was the singer with whom Toše planned to collaborate last year, however his death on the way to Zagreb put paid to this.
Other performers were Leontina Vukmanović, lyricist of the 2004 Serbian and Montenegro Eurovision Song Contest entry Lane Moje, when Toše himself participated in the contest, and Ruslana, who won it for Ukraine. Marija Šestić, Bosnia and Hercegovina’s 2007 Eurovision entrant also sang, as well as Kaliopi, Simon Trpceski, Aki Rahimovski, Adrijan Gaxha, Sintezis, Bilja Krstić, Bojan Marović, Goca Trzan, Željko Samardzić, Miroslav Rus, Sandi and many more.
Although Toše’s parents were expected to attend, it seems that the approaching first anniversary of their son’s death made it all too much for them.
Toše Proeski was killed in a car crash on a Croatian motorway on 16th October 2007.

I'm also from Norway, and I sure didn't notice the country standing still when Jan Werner Danielsen died. I don't know anyone who felt like they had lost a friend either. He wasn't a person who shared his life with his fans, which is something I can fully understand, but it does create a certain distance. I really think most Norwegians considered him having an exceptionally good voice, but other than that they didn't think of him any different than other artists. (Well, perhaps apart from the gay community and the really hardcore ESC-fans, that is ;-})
Jan Werner didn't have the same kind of "mission" Tose did. Tose was a great hope and ambassador for the children of the Balkans, children of all religions and ethnicities. I'm a teacher in Oslo and in my class I have pupils from (among several other countries) Kosovo, Albania, Serbia, Croatia and Macedonia, both Christian and Muslim, and they all know him, his music and his good work. He gave a lot to kids, both when it came to money and his time and heart. He was a UNICEF ambassador for children in the Balkans, and the work he did was widely recognised in the international community of humanitarian work. And he wasn’t just an “honorary” UNICEF ambassador either, he was really “hands on” in his job.
Jan Werner was definitely not loved by "his people" in the same way Tose was. The Norwegian parliament didn't close for a day when he died, no national day of mourning was held, schools didn't close, peolpe didn't flood the streets to light candles and comfort each other. (The only time that's happened in this country was when our previous king died.)
I think these are examples that show the difference in position these two artists had in their respective countries. And, yes, I DO realize that some of this is down to cultural differences, but that sure doesn't explain all of it.
@ T K
I don´t mean to speak in any offence, but what do you mean by "people like" and then mentioning me and other persons on this site..?
We have all our regional famous persons who dies an untimely death, but it seems the different coultures have a different way of mourning them. Like , here in Norway, when Jan Werner Danielsen tragically died 2 years ago it was almost like the whole country froze to a complete stand-still and we all felt like we had lost a guy we knew and respected for his good deeds and personality. BUT we did not blame rest of the world for not joining us in our loss and mourning..
It may be that we up here in the North thinks that it is our own concern and handle the grief and shoc by ourselves and carrying on through; While you have it in you that your grief should be shared with the rest of the world.. i don´t know. And again NO OFFENCE....!
may this talented young artist rest in peace....
@renee: thank u for the kind words. yes there is a certain magic in his voice, and he seemed so natural singing. please look up him singing zajdi zajdi, his rendition of this brought a tear to anna vissi's eyes
.
@jonny: thanks mate! ive seen that bbc stuff, but i was very happy to see it again!
I agree with TK in that, even if you like or don't like Tose, ppl have to be respectful.
And I think he must have been huge, check out this BBC report on it, - http://uk.youtube.co(...)/watch?v=sgU2p9Rv3tI - The fact that the news reached the BBC is one thing, and that fact that they did a report shows how big and inspirational he was.
Not only that, they also did a section of their website (reaction thingy) for people to pay their respects to him - http://news.bbc.co.u(...)ng_point/7047514.stm
Check out his version of "Jesus to a child". http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=ztKowVyK-Xk
Even as a (VERY) longtime George Michael fan, I have to admit that the way Tôse just sits there on his stool and sings this song as if it was the most natural thing in the world brings tears to my eyes.
And though I have to agree he wasn't a worldwide megastar; he was a megastar to me, in Norway, not part of the Balkans last time I checked ;-}). I've been listening to his music ever since Istanbul, and most of it I just love. There's something in his voice that's just so perfect.
He's also got a fantastic duet with Karolina Goceva called "Nemir".
http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=-hhwnqoPjYk
He was also a UNICEF ambassador for Children, and in that capacity he recorded a song called "Za ovoj zvet" ("This world" in English) from the sales of which all the earnings were donated to Macedonian charities for children.

I do realize that not everyone like the same music I do, but I really don't see how anyone can deny the magic in his voice. The song "The hardest thing" was mentioned earlier, and for me the hardest thing will always be realizing that he's really gone.

and to ppl like arabic scents.. mate come please have a little respect. regardles of what you think of tose as an artist, plz take into account that a) he is dead and not here to defend himself, which is very very uncouth to do mind u, and b) US, his fans are still mourning his loss and hurt when we hear things like this...
no1 is askin u 2 like him, heck its dumb to automatically become a fan juz cause sum1 dies.. but please just have a bit of humanity and keep ur thoughts to urself, just on this occasion
ok let me rephrase the jumble i spat out... basically alls im sayin is that tose didnt have to be a star throughout the world to be a megastar, however in the balkans he certainly was a megastar! here in australia we have singers who we call mega stars but id be surprised if anyone outside of australia, NZ and the UK have any idea who they are lol..
to ppl like robert, ws and finn p, i guess esc today doesnt realy give much background on why tose is so revered, so i say get out there, look him up, find out why he is the beloved one lol! and if u ask really nice US, his fans, will be more than happy to fill u in
its funny how ppl cant read... or one douche bag lol... doesnt say he was an international megastar, merely a balkan-key word-balkan megastar.. and that is undeniable! rip tose
well srbija i dunno wat ur talkin about, wen i was in slovenija and maso last yr everyone was pretty into tose... wen he came to sydney the whole of the ex yu community went crazy, his concerts sold out. wen tose died the whole of the australian ex yu community was in mourning.. and we can see the effect it had in the balkans..
as for tose my mate at uni moved to sydney from macedonia and still remembers tose stopping to give her and the other kids lifts wen he would drive past them to and from krusevo...
bog da go prosti, tose who cares what others way, we love u..
Tina n escada: guys quit bothering, we are only a joke to these ppl, y should they care about us??? we are nothing to them, just an object of contempt
tose
i reaaly miss u
Its sad when somebody had to die to become popular.
rest in piece Tose. But Its pathetic that now all of them says he was megastar, and when he was alive, they didnt care for him at all
I saw my ID and it wasnt me,
It was someone else's identity
Why do I need to prove myself?
And who is the judge of my sanity?
We miss you Tose - my favourite ESC entrant ever!
Rest in piece!
@Robert Andresen,
thank you for asking.. i was wondering the same thing!
It's funny how culture differences are sometimes so clear on this forum
you see, if someone here said that some singer was for instance 'the best person in the balkans', an angel of light or whatever, I would think they were mocking them or at least I would find it hard to take it seriously.. just because people dont talk like that here... not criticising, just something that struck me.
@Escada-i am half greek
but it doesn't matter because all the people should know that politics has nothing with music and even less with angels...
I think he will like "The hardest thing"....because no one can resist that angelic voice.....
I LOVE U TOSE
@LM1
that's because Leontina was on of the writers of "Cija si"-one of Tose's biggest hits but we know that Anjeza respects him because she wouldn't have come if she didn't...
And also 50.000 not 30.000 people attended the concert!
greeings to all the people who love Tose
@ Tina B
Even if he was a megastar( which he WAS ) do u think that someone with Greek heritage would listen to a Macedonian singer ... I don't think so ... So I am just going to let him express his opinion and don't bother about what he says you should do that too .....
As for @Arabic Scents
Continue live in a Helena dimension and sing her songs in a mirror.....
the article mentions that the lyricist of lane moje from ESC 2004 performed, coz she wrote that in the same year tose participated in esc, yet fails to mention that anjeza shahini who was friends with tose and actually did participate in 2004 performed? hmmm lol
Florian
Yes, "Igri bez granici" is a great song too and deeply moving.
okay
and do you want to hear one of his songs??It's very very very beautifull-it is on his english album and it's called "The Hardest Thing"
I think you will like it
and this is from the last concert on 5 th of October this year
http://www.youtube.c(...)/watch?v=r3C2Ks_EngM
greets
Tina....I would like to tell you that Tose for me was by far the best entrant of FYR Macedonia. I'm not underestimate him but everything I know about him is only his participation to Eurovision.
and he could have become WORLDWIDE MEGASTAR, he didnt waste time...but he died that's what stopped him
greetings
thats what i thought
And now can you imagine why am i speaking that way for TOSE, why am i fighting with you?
Because I KNOW TOSE SINCE I KNOW ABOUT ME
and all the Macedonians&Balcans do
because we know each step he took each thing he did
and he was proving us all the way again and again how great he was...
Now i understand...it's normal for a person who heard only "Life" to speak that way...
greetings
No I haven't. This shows that he wasn't a megastar at least not for the whole world.
@ws..you are right...the accident stopped him to make an international career wider than the Balcan one...
best wishes
and greetings
Tina, Robert Andresen asked a legitimate question in a civilized way. I am Dutch and frankly I had the same question, because for me too it is very hard to relate to the way Tose's fans speak about him. But of course most people from outside the Balkans don't know him that well, and of course I respect the way you keep his memory alive.
As for Arabic Scents, his only goal is obviously to troll. Better to ignore him.
you know u may be right...but let me ask u something
Have you heard something else from Tose or just"Life"?
HAHAHA
thank you very much!that was a really nice compliment
And yes i once saw him on the street and i said hi Tose and he was so so so kind he spoke to me like we know eachother
all life...
