Last chance for songwriters

Sweden: One week until the Melodifestivalen deadline

It may be only September but there's already just one week left for Swedish songwriters interested in entering a song to Melodifestivalen 2009, the Swedish national final for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Songwriters have until the 23rd September to send their songs to SVT. Apart from including the song on a CD, songwriters must also include the lyrics and information about the demo artist.

As usual, there are already many rumours going around the Swedish press about artists who have submitted a demo, including Danny Saucedo, who recently represented Sweden in the Eurovision Dance Contest in Glasgow, Lena Philipsson who represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004, Molly Sandén who came 3rd in the 2006 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, and past Melodifestivalen entrants such as Måns Zelmerlöw, Sonja Aldén, Caracola, Nordman and Hannah Graaf.

SVT will be hoping to beat 2008's record of 3434 received songs by the time the deadline passes. The selected songs will be announced later this year, with the artists & SVT's own wildcards to follow.

Oh my god.. have you not learnt anything from this year's ESC? We don't need a singer who is exclusively known from participating in the contest before. We need a real performer, with a career in the "real" world of music to lean back on.I wonder how many 18th places it will take for SVT to realise this...

Much as I like new "fresh" faces in MF I want to see the established artists too. I think Amanda and Molly Sandén would be great :)

Yes to more indie/rock! I saw Eskobar live in Linköping and they were great. Unfortunatly they wasn't as great on TV...

Sorry...but I hated Sonyas song with a passion! OK, she is cute and sings nicely. But the song? Bana.l, old-fashioned, cliche ridden ballad in this dull pompous style which only seem to exist in ESC..never a good thing. Another songs from 07 I found overpraised was Cara mia...Just banal schlagerrubbish. Nothing new! I'm glad they selected The Ark. they had a quality song. More rock styled, far more credible.

Anyway...I like the MF system a lot, and they put so much life, effort and good will into it. They believe so strongly in it, it carries over to us who watches. Even if I might like the songs in a Lithuanian quarter final equally much. Sometimes it's unfair that other countries NFs are forgotten whilst MF gets SO much attention. And I hate schlagers! Key-changes, aha-choir...ABBA-piano....ush! Sanna Nielsen is one of the worst of it's kind..:"Vågar du vågar jag" screams of tedious clichees...

Anyway...Despite being a bit harsh, i have actually more or less liked most of the songs in the MF semis since 02. very few songs I disliked. I also like that they move more and more away from the schalger trend. More into something credible we also hear OUTSIDE ESc..:This year it was more rock, rnb, ethno etc...The only really banal schlager song I think was by Velvet. Fortunately, it was no success. Seing Eskobar was GREAT...hope more of that...indie / rock style. Last year I loved the song "God morgon" most...what a song! God Morgon from MF 81 was good too...even if very schlager! Those times schlagers sounded more in their place, more like other 80s pop music.

Interesting, when Sweden did badly this year with a schlagerdisco song (which I actually liked), even they themselves talked about it was time to leave the old-fashioned schlager style...and go for something more modern, like music from the charts etc. I hope they go further in that direction...with more modernity.

@Willox
I'm also proud of being swedish in terms of ESC. But when just half of the contestants feels fresh and the final feels like it could have been any final the past ten years - I don't see how to move forward. We can't hang on to old times for ever.

yeah, Amanda Jensen is an alternative!

@Molly Parton

LOL - that didn't cross my mind, so true! :P

But I don't think I would buy that though... I put it like this instead - I hope for 30 new fresh faces and acts!

@ Stockholm calling: If the song is similar to Amarula tree I would appreciate her. Very nice song. It's something different to the typical Swedish schlager.

Melodifestivalen is so great. i love being swedish as our pre-selection is sooo fantastic.. mtuch better than the Eurovision by a mile..

well in 2008 more than half of the contestants where new faces in MF.. so their is really no complaining to do.

Every preselection should have the Swedish "standard" and system !!!

Even in the Netherlands, where I come from. I hope they don't "just" select Anouk or any other artist.

What are the chances of Sweden sending something that's not camp?

Mistres Evelin

"I hope for about 30 new faces..."

.... well if Lena Philipsson and Charlotte enter again you will at least get six old faces and seven new ones.

I can't think of anything remotely interesting to say in reaction to this article. Neither can anyone else by the look of it. Oh - wait a minute - Frida Lyngstad is 63 next month, and Agnetha Faltskog is about to marry Meryl Streep. There - that's livened it up.
