EDC dropped for football?
Spain withdraws? EBU receives no confirmation
It was known time ago that Eurovision Dance Contest would be held on September 6th, and on the same date Spanish football team would play against Bosnia & Herzegovina in a match of the FIFA World Cup qualifying round. Finally, the public television has decided to schedule the game instead of the European event.
This decision came this morning, just 17 days before the event takes place in Glasgow and few days after Spain was drawn a lucky last place in the running order. If confirmed that Spain has withdrawn, it means that the dancing couple, Rosa and Nieto - winner of the contest ¡Quiero bailar!, organised by TVE with the aim of choosing the professional dancer for Glasgow - would have to end all their preparations because they would not be representing their country anymore.
esctoday.com asked the EBU if the decision had been confirmed to the organisation in Geneva, we were told "The EBU did not receive any formal withdrawal from Spanish broadcaster TVE, so I do not want to respond to this speculation".
Spanish viewers wanting to watch the contest live will not have the chance of watching it on the public channel. Sister channel TVE2 will not air the event so the audience will have to watch Eurovision Dance Contest on eurovision.tv or on other European broadcasters via satellite.
It remains to be seen if Spain will participate and broadcast the show at a later date. Should this be the case, Spanish voting will be conducted by the backup jury. Withdrawal at such a late stage would mean TVE must still pay the full participation fee and hotel costs.

SOREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.SPAIN AGAINST US WE WILL LOSE PROBABLY 5-0.ANYWAY ATLEAST TVE2 SHOULD BRODCAST THE EDC
TVE shows a big disrespect against the EDC. That is for me another sign that the big4 and some "older" participants of the contest do not really care anymore about ESC, because like it or not, JESC and EDC are also part of the ESC family. I had been thinking the EDC needed a big promotion right now and not a dismisal for a football game.
Finn P. yeah, Rosa and Nieto surely aren´t pleased... I still think that we don´t really know the story behind this "possible" withdraw, so I can only think that EBU did not accommodate Spain´s to have the date changed.
Lol I remember when Graham Norton said "yeah, Lithuania, the home of laughter" - laughed my ass off
@Sí mi reina:
there are people who care here what we call our country abroad, I don't give a toss myself. When there's football on everyone shouts Hup Holland Hup anyway so I honestly don't see the point...
By the way, isnt this EXTREMELY unfair for the dancing couple in question to be dumped over a football match everyone knows Spain is going to win anyway?! I mean, I love football but to wait less than two weeks before the event THEN say 'oh yeah you know what, dont think we will actually...' - when theyve probably been preparing for ages - it's bullsh it.
Hello, good night Felipe Ramos:
"it was so funny when the portuguese jury said "hello! good night" "
You are WRONG: no Portuguese jury at all, it was the Portuguese woman who called the Portuguese votes who made a funny mistake when saying hello, good night. It was funny because she did not realize what she had just said and seemed a bit annoyed when Graham Norton told her "please, don´t go away yet! "
"...as when the spannish jury said "Holland" but not "Netherlands" in 1996.... do you remember??? " No, I don´t and I don´t care about it at all. The Deutch people in here can have a say about it, wait and see.
"so, please check and don't complain about the western spannish neighbour, thanks"
Who´s complaining? You are, not me. It was a funny moment, the same goes to the Lithuanian lady who got the points messed up, but so not? Don´t you have anything more relevant to talk about??
Good news. These "other" Eurovision contests are a joke, and unlike the May event, should not be taken seriously.
I'd even question, why non-Eurovision music stories are posted here in the first place.
shame on TVE!!!!!
I would like to see Croatia participating. We have a lot of good dancers!
Certainly, nobody cares in Spain and nobody cares in Gibraltar, Andorra etc
EDC is another contest walking to death very close to JESC.
@ si, mi reina ...
it was so funny when the portuguese jury said "hello! good night" as when the spannish jury said "Holland" but not "Netherlands" in 1996.... do you remember??? so, please check and don't complain about the western spannish neighbour, thanks
Jonny:
"The rules are for the UK selection that the songwriter has to be British, but the singer can be from anywhere"
So, that's why BWO were not allowed to compete with a song of their own.
There are also rumours here in Spain about this, but I don't mind if my country is or isn't in EDC. Anyway, I'm not sure if a lot of people would watch that football match against Bosnia...
LOL Jonny, I will if I like them
Mina
I can help you with that problem, it would definitely be fairest if you VOTE FOR THE UK!!!!
lol
Jonny
Good decision
I'm going to watch EDC, too, for the first time. I'll probably vote but I have no idea who I'll vote for...sooooooo different to ESC.
Stockholm
EDC it is then!
I suppose footbal is on alot and Eurovision is always better live so, EDC for me!
I really look forward to this event and I'm glad I don't have to choose as I don't care much for football. There seem to be many interesting couples taking part. Of course it will be great to see Tatiana Navka from Russia. She's a very good ice dancer
And let's hope that Rosa and Nieto will be able to compete too.
Jonny
If you're going to vote you'd better watch EDC live
lol don't worry I think next year the UK is gonna come back with a bang because apparently we're getting a kick ass selection process from the BBC!!
Well, I wish all the best for the UK in EDC. As for ESC, maybe Gibraltar composers can come to the country´s rescue... and win the whole thing!
Si me reina
Well Gibraltan TV do show the final, with the BBC broadcast live, but they don't show the semis. And as for voting in esc . . . hmm . . . I think if they wanted to vote they would have to use the Spanish numbers. Or use the international dialing code for the UK which is +44. So if they wanted to vote using the BBC numbers they would have to put +44 0901 5220 (xx). Complicated!
And as for the UK selection, well yes ofcourse Gibraltar could send an artist. The rules are for the UK selection that the songwriter has to be British, but the singer can be from anywhere, and most of the people living in Gibraltar are Brits anyway
But they do only have 30,000 people!
Jonny K, can Gibraltar cast vote in ESC and EDC? And the other islands, can they vote, also? Can they send candidates for the UK national selection? Maybe they have better entrants than Daz and Scooch...
Sí, mi reina
Sort of, its complicated. They are under the "rule" of the British government but they have their own government aswell and don't have to abide by some of our laws, they're under the British map, but sort of independant if you see what i'm saying. A bit like the Channel Islands or Gurnsey, Jersey, Alderney & Sark
Doesn´t Gibraltar belong to the UK??
I don't care about EDC either.
So will Gibraltar replace Spain in EDC and JESC?
Although this does present a dilemna, because do I watch the football live, and watch EDC on the iplayer afterwards??? Or do I watch EDC live and then the football on the iplayer???!! hmmm descisions descision!!
marc
I don't think the voting in EDC is as bad as ESC, because there is only something like 5 or 6 eastern countries so they can't really vote for their friends. And Armenia & Turkey don't take part so the western vote is alot fairer
I enjoyed it last year, I was dissapointed with the result though. I was happy Finland won but Switzerland & the UK both deserved much much better places
But this year we have a better draw so fingers crossed!
