I love M.I.A. too but is she not a Brit?
Anyway on the subject of BWO they may get played on BBC radio (can't say I have ever heard it) but they are not really popular at all here if their actual sales are anything to go by.

Or do they really think BWO and Carola are famous outside the Nordic countries ?
Yes, BWO is famous outside the Nordic countries. That´s why the BBC Radio 2 plays their songs.
I don´t give a damn about your musical taste or languages of preference. I just let you know that you were wrong on your assumptions.
Why would I have to listen to a foreign radio station like BBC Radio Two which hardly plays music in German, French, Dutch, Swedish, Russian etc ?
Jan, do you have some other opinion than japping about language ? You know that singing in English gives more opportunities to win, so why should keep on going on about it. I also prefered the original languages but that's the past my friend.....
Can I just point out that Abba Gold went to first spot for the 4th time in 30 years, over here in UK..... So Sweden no influence ??? I love Swedish pop.... Sweden rules.
Paul Oscar was absolutely great, totally undervalued...One of best performances ever.... Excellent song
@Max:
i am glad that you got my point in the end(i admit my first statement was a bit messy). I hope too, i will nt have to visit the Oktoberfest, actually i have managed to avoid this. And of course there are some very good german artists, djs, singers, chanson-singers, even some good pop ones. and i think that Germany has sent some very good entries in the last years to the ESC: Texas lightening-"Never-Never" was one of my favourites, Roger Cicero was very, very good, Max Muetzke and "can't wait until tonight" back in 2004 was one of my absolute favourites, i was mad i couldn't vote for it, because i watched the show here. But yu see, for me none of these artists or entries were "schlager"-like
@max: i agree wit u! i just got back from some time in berlin, and i gotta say i never EVER heard german schager anywhere, admittedly no1 i was hanging out with was over 30 though lol....
germany has got some pretty awesome music acts too, i really love m.i.a! although that alex c song- du bist so porno is rather funny tho
Jan:
Sweden, most influential in pop music ??? Sweden is still a minor market with not that many famous artists. Or do they really think BWO and Carola are famous outside the Nordic countries ?
Have you ever listened to the BBC Radio 2? They play BWO regularly. Yes, the BBC plays BWO r-e-g-u-l-a-r-l-y.
@ Vincent Barbarino
Okay, now we're coming together...
Of course, you're not disrespecting a country by not liking a certain type of its music - I just thought you were referring to the Germans in common...
Well, I hope for you that you don't have to stay in Munich during the Oktoberfest-time or in Cologne or Mainz during the carnival-time...
Max,
you are right in that my first comment about "schlager" was not very clear. Sometimes i write something in a hurry and i just post it without any second glance at it. I knoe that not all Germans like "schlager", although i think almost everyone has a bit of a soft point for this, especially after a couple of beers. I mean this music is light, easy, kinf of party anthems and the "schlager" songs are songs that everybofy knows. But it is nothing for my personal taste, i actually suffer when i listen to them, be it on the radio or somewhere else. And i think that "schlager" do come up very very often here..
I also did not refer to german entries in the ESC and i did not refer to all germans(to some of the devoted fans of schlager, not even to all of those) and i do not think that saying i do not like the german "schlager" type of music shows any misrespect for your country, which happens to be currently kind of mine also. Respecting Germany does not mean liking everything one gets to hear or see here. So i insist and i make it once more clear: i do not like at all german "schlagers" and sometimes you get to listen to them along with some drunk people who wildly scream and dance to these songs. This type of music is for my personal taste the worst ever
"for me sweden has the second worst taste in pop music after the germans who love : cheap, party-like anthem for partying people stuffed with beer"
You said "after the Germans" - so, what should I read carefully? You didn't make any difference... So your second comment was absolutely necessary to understand what you mean... I hope you don't think that all the Germans love "Schlager"-music... Actually, nowadays, this is rather a minor part...
I mean, it's the same in Greece. For me, the majority of Greece's recent Eurovision entries are cheap. But I know a bit - unfortunately always too less - of the Greek music scene and I know that there are many better examples of Greek music.
So I don't say Greeks have a bad taste in music because this surely wouldn't be fair. It would be nice if you could show the same respect for my home country as well and don't judge all the Germans by some few examples...
@Max Raspail,
before you start criticising me and draw conclusions for my person, although you do not know me at all, please read carefully my comments. I wasn't referring to whole german music, iwas just referring to ONE typical kind f german popular music, that is the "schlager", by this i mean Marianne Rosenberg, Guildo Horn and co..and this is truly the type of music i can not stand and yes i have some pictures in my mind of drunk bunch of people singing and dancing to it. I did not criticize neither the people who liked this kind of music, nor Roger Cicero or Rosenstolz. For me both these artists do not belong to the "schlager" genre. But i have the right to say that i loathe the typical party-german schlager, and yes i had some terrible nights having to listen to them because i was invited into a pub or a klub which plays that kind of music
A great showman! His 1997 entry deserved much more than 20th!
To be honest I don't know many Swedish artists but there's always the possibility that some singers are Swedish and I just don't know it..lol
I learned very recently that the Ace of base are Swedish..and to think that I loved both All that she wants and Beautiful life!
@ Vincent Barbarino
"The Germans who love cheap, party-like anthem for partying people stuffed with beer?"
Well, boy, you seem to spend a terrible time here in Germany or what else could be the reason that you judge in such an unfair way?
You would say, Annett Louisan, Roger Cicero or Wir sind Helden make the typical music for drunk music? Ich + Ich, 2raumwohnung and Xavier Naidoo, Nena, Grönemeyer and Rosenstolz - yeah, right, this music surely makes people ill...
You seem to be stuck in your prejudices and don't seem to have any clue about the German music scene - so just stop it...
BWO are known throughout eastern Europe, whilst I was travelling last year I heard all sorts of their songs from the Ukraine to Belarus and in Moldova.
Hardly see any Croation, Macedonian, Belarussian or Romanian music making waves on the world stage.
Sweden has produced some amazing acts of recent - Robyn, Peter, Bjorn & John, The Sounds, The Cardigans... so I don't think it is fair to judge them based solely on Melodifestivalen schlager staples.
I never said that it´s quality music, but when the biggest names in the record-industry goes to Sweden and record Swedish songs, and they chart all over the world, it must be called somewhat influential, musn´t it?
for me sweden has the second worst taste in pop music after the germans who love : cheap, party-like anthem for partying people stuffed with beer. For me the swedish taste f pop is only one step superior to the german schlager, the music i dislike and which makes me ill
