2009 quest begins
Switzerland: SF call for songs
Just like last year, Switzerland is one of the first countries to start their search for an entry to Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The country's public broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen (SF) has just published the rules for this year's national selection. All those interested in submitting an entry can do it from now on till October 20th, when the deadline closes.
It is possible that 2009 will see a non-Swiss national or a non-Swiss resident representing Switzerland since one of the most remarkable novelties this year says that those requirements are not a must anymore.
Anyway, SF stresses on the experience of the candidates: they must have released a video clip and an album at least -entering the top-50 charts once minimum- as well as performed live. Following this criterium, the broadcaster will invite several names of the Swiss show business to take part in the competition. SF will also try to involve media in the whole project.
The lucky Swiss representative for 2009 will be selected by an internal jury.

I would send Patrick Nuo. I just love him ^^
Good luck to Switzerland!!!!
They should choose a French song this time.
My favourite Swiss entries were:
Era stupendo (2008)
If we all give a little (2006)
Cool vibes (2005)
La vita cos`e (2000)
Moi tout simplement (1993)
Ne partez pas sans moi (1988)
Moitié, moitié (1987)
Ulrik Raben:
"Cool vibes" and "Io senza te" are my favourite Swiss entries too
Switzerland should had won in 1981 and 2005!
I liked this year's Swiss entry, but the live performance was a bit disappointing, so I was not surprised Paolo didn't qualify. By the way, I don't see the problem if a non-Swiss represents Switzerland, if Swiss agree.
I love Super Saruntuya's comments, they make my day!
Burr:
I have read here you posting serious and very well written posts, why don't you do that more often?
It was unfair that Switzerland didn't make it to the finals this year !!! "Era Stupendo " was one of the best songs in this year's contest. My favourite Swiss entries ever are :
1. Io senza te - 1981
2. Vivre - 1978
3. Cool Vibes - 2005
All the best in 2009 !!!!
They're great! They're so determined and enthusiastic. Always the first ones to choose their song. Hope they will get to the final this year.
burr, do u not understand what weve just said?
in 2005 & 2006, yes, switzerland sent artists not from switzerland
but in the last 2 years and nearly all the years before they sent swiss acts
Paolo has the Swiss passport!! he is from the Italian speaking part of Switzerland!!
Burr
There is nothing in the ESC rules which states that a country has to send an artist from that country, a lot of countries do this or have people from other countries competing to represent that country in ESC.
So what if Vanilla Ninja was not Swiss, who cares?
And could you prove in court that Paolo doesn't have Swiss citizenship? I don't think so, so why ask Kevin to?
Well Vanilla Ninja had sang my most favourite swiss entry, Cool Vibes. They are from Estonia.
Paolo Meneguzzi was born in Switzerland but both his parents are Italian so he has both nationalities.
DJ Bobo's father is Italian, his mother is Swiss and he was born in Switzerland.
@ Burr
"Change?
I wonder who of the kast past Swiss entries was Swiss?
italian Paolo? Last year's six-piece international salad or 2006 Estonian Ninjas???"
thats completely wrong
paolo was swiss
dj bobo was swiss
six4one was 2006, and vanilla ninja was 2005
in 2004, 2002, 2000, 1998 etc they sent swiss acts
Good Luck Switzerland, make it to the final again after 2005.
I feel 2009 is your year
Hope Austria is back soon
I really liked the song, and Paulo is a sweet guy, but sang badly on stage. and the song was horrible out-dated (come on western europe, this is not the 80ies).
He had no place in the fianls
Switzerland like Austria has no intrest in ESC, so they will never ever do well.
Don't be so sure that what countries are famous for or what they send to ESC is really representative of what the country is actually like
I hope so! Or all the Latvians are pirates.
LOL
I thought that Switzerland would do really well this year. "Era stupendo" was a great song, one of the best entries imo. It's a shame that Paolo's performance was so poor. I was very disappointed. Best of luck in 2009
My favourite Swiss entry is "Cool Vibes" too.
"CharlottA who flopped in the final.."
Candyman's combination lol and very true :-)
I don't insist on Sanna although I know for sure she would get more votes than Charlotte and that's among the people I know...Empty Room is such an emotional song and she sings it beautifully.
About Switzerland, my favourite Swiss entry was Cool Vibes in 2005, I loved that song.
Switzerland has contributed with many great songs in the past. My favourite Swiss entry is "Io Senza Te" in 1981
@mina
I think that "Empty Room" wouldn't even make it to the final. Sanna was good on Melodifestivalen cause of that long stage. I wonder how good would she be if Sweden sent her on Eurovision? How would her performance on that stage in Belgrade look like? I think it wouldn't be something special as on Melodifestivalen.
Anyway, "Hero" was chosen as the greatest song of second semifinal by the jury, so i don't doubt Sweden sent us the right song.
TOPIC: Good luck Switzerland!
Simon,
she made it through but if Sweden had sent the people's favourite (Sanna with Empty Room) I'm positive Sweden wouldn't have needed the jury. Maybe it's because I love that song, I don't know.
@ Mina, I agree with you about Paolo's performance... regarding Sweden though - it's hard to say if the internal jury was a good or bad thing - after all she did make it through on the Jury vote of the evening, maybe proving that juries still have an important role to play in national selections.
OMG the 2009 season is already starting I am sooooo excited!!
And we will have EDC soon aswell . . . . . . eurovision overload!!
(although a eurovision overload is often a good thing!)
Paolo and Era Stupendo was one of my favourites but he was so disappointing live that I really didn't expect him to make it to the final and I don't think it had to do with block voting or anything like that...after all western countries didn't vote for Switzerland either..the Uk, Iceland, Sweden, Portugal, didn't give him any points.
About 2009, if they use an internal jury I'm afraid they're going to have the luck Sweden had this year.
oh, they are so fast with this. congratulations and good luck on ESC 2009!
