Portugal: Senhora do mar wins radio award

After winning the Press Award for the best song of the Eurovision song contest 2008 in Belgrade, Vania Fernandes and the producer and songwriter Carlos Coelho won the award for the best performance and best song of the year by a recognised station of Portuguese Radio.

Vania and Paolo will be receiving the awards duirng  the annual gala "Pedrada no Charco" organised by Radio Central de Leiria /Rádio Clube Portugues, which will take place at Fátima's auditorium and will be presided over by the president of the Portuguese Republic, Me Anibal Cavaco Silva himself.

Last week the song was also the most requested song by the readers of the popular Portuguese music site cotonete.clix.pt and artists from Lithuania and Israel asked authorisation for covers of Senhora do mar.

But the good news keep on coming for Vania and Carlos Coelho. The remix version of Senhora do mar will be part of a special Cd edition called Best of Dj Rui da Silva to be released along with the September edition of the magazine Dance Planet.

sonia,
the bodyguards were for the Stradivarius. But even if they were for him (although I find it hard to believe because I saw him in his promo tour and he never had bodyguards)...Ani Lorak also had bodyguards, the Azeri singers also had bodyguards...did anyone comment on that? No, it was always Dima, Dima, Dima.
When did he show his chest in a press conference? I don't remember that at all.
As for the videos, you're talking about the pics that he took 4 years ago...well, I've seen sexy pictures by so many stars, many of them from my own country so they really don't bother me..and why should they? I judge him as an artist.
Now, about whether Believe's lyrics are good or whether he's cute, of course, that's a matter of personal taste, I totally agree on that.

Silêncio e Tanta Gente (ESC 1984) is also one of my major favourite Portuguese songs - a masterpiece! Glad to realise that there are others that also enjoy it... and ONLY finished in 11th place - truly underrated (something that happens quite often regarding Portuguese entries at ESC... )

Chwarae Teg,
Great to see someone who also likes "Silencio e tanta gente" :)

Chwarae Teg,
I get your point now although I don't think it's fair to hold against someone the fact that they are good looking. Dima may be cute but what should he do? Put on 30 kilos and grow a beard? LOL
For me, Believing is a really good song, the lyrics are beautiful and I like the music and I don't think you can compare it to songs like Wild Dances for example whose only element was the show.
Eurovision has proven that looks don't matter. Just because there were many pretty women in the contest, we shouldn't generalize..I mean, remember last year.
Now if you're talking about quality of songs, again, it's a matter of personal taste. I didn't like Senhora do Mar, although I found Vania's voice great. I liked Hold on, Be strong, I liked Oro, I liked Unsubstantial Blues last year, I liked Lane Moje (2004), I liked Angel (2005), there are still many good songs around.
And ofcourse the biggest example is Marija's victory last year.
Sometimes we just have to accept that a song we love, just isn't liked as much by others...not because the singer is ugly or fat or whatever..it just isn't.

Mina

I don't think I explained myself very well, or was glib - my fault.

Generally speaking, with a few exceptions, the performers at ESC these days seem to be chosen because they are attractive, or are overtly sexual in their performance (which I find tiresome - and Dima certainly falls into that category, bikini or not!), or give a performance that is very, very visual (like Lordi - Lordi in bikinis, what a great image!!).

I fear the days of the likes of Chiara and Marija (great voices, good songs), who you mentioned, are fast disappearing. When I think of simply-presented performances of wonderful songs (like Silencio e Tanta Gente, or Kinek Mondjam el Vitkeimet, or Senhora do Mar, to name three that spring to mind) I get depressed for the shortage of similar quality of SONG. I don't want to be a boring old fart, and I KNOW that there are great songwriters and singers around - but they have little chance if they don't have the 'look'. What next on the ESC stage? A sex-show? A writhing orgy? A trapeze-artist on rollerblades above a tank of sharks? A volcano? A simulated earthquake?

I know visual imagery is a factor, but it should be a contributory factor and not the main event - visual gimmicks should add to the song, not outdo it. It's a SONG contest after all!

Paolo Konstantinos:
Andrej composed the song yes and invited Carlos coellho to write the lyrics in Portuguese not a translation, the lyrics arent the same. They have been working for a few years now as a duo and not just for Portugal this year. Apart from that Carlos Coelho was also Vania's producer for Portugal ( senhora do mar) this year. About the trip, before the national final RTP made the rules and they signe a contract with all the contestants , that only the singers and the producer would have the dispenses payed by RTP and Andrej agreed with it. It's wrong? Yes , probably but Andrej agreed with the rules, that is why even if he had no expenses payed he was in Belgrade at the Portuguese party and a few press conferencies and interviews.
About the radio, Radio de Leiria/ radio club Portugues, is that the same radio that launged David Fonseca and the Silence four? the same radio that in this same gala award Pedro Abrunhosa???!!!
Pedrada no charco became one of the most important music awards for few talents otherwise the President of Portugal , Anibal Cavaco Silva wouldnt be there dont u think?!!!!!!!
Please check your sourches before making your statments!!!!!!!
And btw your name doesnt sound very Portuguese....and for a Greek or Cypriot u seem to know a lot or NOT.
Tout Tout

Vincent,
let's not forget the Czech girls this year...over here everyone was talking about them..LOL..but still they didn't make it.

Mina, i agree with you: beiing a sexy girl or a sexy boy in the ESC des not guarantee any victory or even a good scoring: some examples: Angelica Agurbash(Belarus, ESC 2005), Javine(!)(UK, ESC 2005), the girl from Bulgaria this year singing with DJ Deep Zone and Dj Baltahzar. I would say it is an advantage, whenever the song and most of all the show is good.

and i ditaste all these discussions about ugly and beautiful people and about people who would look bad in a bikini or good. Taste is vey variable and different, ESC proves this too..all other things are social racism, marginalisation of some people who do not look like our current social standards..Vania was beautifull, i am sure even in a bikini, and i think Marija seemed very beautifull to some people. And i now some people(greeks by the way!) who find Kalomoira and Helena not beautiful at all, actually they can not stand watching them

LOL, Mina, I think i'll stick to Mrs Lordi instead!!! :) However somebody who truly likes thrillers would have Verka, and belive me I wouldn't want to see Verka in a bikini even if I was blind!! :)

Mina
I don't think the Lordi were 'a waif in a silver bikini'
LOL, i'd quite like to see Mr Lordi in a bikini!!!! :)

Mina Carnation [51405]
Mon 14 Jul 2008 22:13:23

Chwarae Teg,
that's not right. Marija isn't the only exception. I don't think the Lordi were 'a waif in a silver bikini'...and Dima certainly wasn't...lol
In the last 4 years the only time a beautiful girl won the contest was Elena in 2005 and certainly it wasn't just because she was beautiful.
As for singers in general, Chiara wasn't a waif but she did extremely well...Maria this year isn't a waif and yet she did very well, too.
So, saying that a country didn't do well just because their singer wasn't sexy I think it's an excuse.

Mina

Marija was a (very welcome) exception to what has become the general rule in recent years.

hehe I didn't know that!! :) Well done to Denmark! :) :D

Jonny:
Well, the Danish people don't vote for other countries in their NF :) However, they can vote for several songs/phone but not for the same song more than once.

I'm also interested to see how the backup juries voted. As Jonny said the Bulgarian jury votes are known to us and the results differ from the televoting - 12 pts to Ukraine, 10 pts to Sweden and 8 pts to The UK !

Jonny:
You have just described the televoting procedure of the Danish NF which is very good!

Jonny K [46883]
Mon 14 Jul 2008 17:31:24

I agree Vincent that the number of votes per line should be limited. However it should be limited to 1 vote per phone, per country. So on one line you could vote for several different countries but you couldn't vote for the same country more than once. :)

Vincent Barbarino [38148]
Mon 14 Jul 2008 15:21:49

i think i opt for 60% televoting, 40% jury voting..but i do not think that Mr. Stockselius(i get a bad mood every one ayear when i see his face in the ESC, i do not know why..) is palnning to do any change..out of some reasons he doesnt want to listen to the growing complaints of many fans of the contest, and out oof reasons that we do not know he likes the voting system and everything as it is. I guess, this voting system must be profitable for the organisers..anther good change for me would be 5-10 votes maximum per line

sotiris avlonitis [44199]

I agree that the the voting from the back up juries is different from the televoting ! Just an information a friend of mine was in the Cypriot back up Jury in 1999 and he told me that , the back up jury gave the 12 points to Slovenia ( Greece didn't go that year ), but final Cyprus televoting didn't give even one point to that song !!! I beleive that 50% of the back up jury and 50% of televoting will be more fare for the songs !!!

I agree Marc, and Germany 2007 was the real winner

Lat years results were made public and indeed results are totally different. Big thing is Winner stays the same.... Big losers, the big 4 (fe Germany would have been 6th instead of 17th or even less), Turkey and Greece would not even be in top 10....

Vincent Barbarino [38148]
Mon 14 Jul 2008 10:26:39

i do not thing that the results of the jury voting would be better or fairer than the televoting results, but yes i think they would be different, even for the winning song.

Jonny K [46883]
Mon 14 Jul 2008 08:27:15

Yes, I would like to see the back-up juries points aswell. We know basically nothing except for the Bulgarian & Turkish votes, which were leaked anyway, not officially released. (Both gave UK 8 points!!) :) I think the reason why they aren't released is because they are sooooooo different from televoting, and if the EBU releases them they will be pressured to bring back the juries, which we all know they don't want! :)

Vincent Barbarino [38148]

i find the results of all OGAE pre votings in the last years pretty weird and not at all accord with my taste, that is why i do not follow them anymore..I think that on the night viewers who see and listen to the entries for the first time and they spontaneously decide to vote for one(or 2, maybe3) make the difference and bring the vitory to an entry..according to me it is not the esc fans, not the "diaspora" voters and certainly not the ogae members.
But i am very curious to see official results by the back up juries..i find it very weird that they do not issue any of them.why this secrecy? i suppose, perhaps they were drastically different from the actual televoting results and Mr. Stockselius would like to spare the contest from a scandal
