Sweden 1974: ABBA reunite for 'Mamma Mia' premiere

The film adaptation of the musical 'Mamma Mia' premiered in London. Alongside the cast of the film, three of the members of ABBA, the winnners of the 1974 Eurovision Songcontest, attended the screening: Björn, Benny and Agnetha.

Another highlight can be added to the successful career of the Swedish pop group, despite having parted more than two decades ago. First came the songs, after the musical and now a film. Leicester Square, in the heart of London, saw yesterday a star-studded premiere of the film 'Mamma Mia.

Meryl Streep heads the cast of the film. As her daughter's Sophie wedding day draws near, her carachter tries to find the father among three 'candidates' played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård. The plot takes place in the Greek Isles.

The complete enssemble of ABBA will reunite for the Stockholm premiere, but for that purppose only.

what a pitty, that we will never get the pleasure of seeing ABBA singing again..i am really shocked and moved..honestly i am glad that abba belong to the museum now..apart from some catchy tunes, i find them kind of kitch

Wonderful news-isn't this the first time they will unite in public since they split up? However, I'll be seeing the movie, that's not something you can miss.

ABBA sold millions of records behind the ironcurtain.
But most of them were bootleggs, so how many copys they sold all together is impossible to say. They never Recorded anything in Russian, "only" in English, Swedish, Spanish, French and German.
Allthough i have heard roumers that they recorded Waterloo in even more languages as a part of Stikkan Andersons p.r.machinery leading up to the Brighton victory.

Mina:
Benny Andersson said the other day that ABBA will never get together again.

And they weren't even the favourites to win in 1974, but The Netherlands. Mouth and MacNeal were well-known. They'd had a few big hits at least in Sweden and "I see a star" was a hit too.

I just love Abba, always have, always will. If they could get back together even for one more song, I would be happy :D

ABBA were reunited in Stockholm 2 days ago - all 4 :)

When ABBA entered Eurovision in 1974 they wanted to perform a contemporary song. The contest was very old fashioned then.
Because the main goal was not to win but to show themselves to millions of European viewers. The only way to have a breakthrough then - before MTV etc. And it worked. Waterloowas a hit in many countries - no 1. in UK and no. 6 in US, for instance.

So I guess they would not enter "Waterloo" today something to become a hit in 2008.

Nevertheless "Waterloo", "Dancing Queen" and other ABBA songs are floor fillers at night clubs even today.

@Vincent Barbadino
they had serious problems with getting the backingtape sound high enough. And the results was that the girls sounded way to loud if you compare it with the way their voices are mixed on the recording. I think that it would have sounded better had they used the live orchestra..

@John Robert;

i know what you are talking about, i like the 70's much myself and i find this glam rock-pop thing ok. It was noot because of the costumes that i did not like waterloo as the winning song: it was the way the two girl sang, kind of timid, a bit awkard and loud. and then there were the two men smiling falsely and looking at the camers the whole time..how can iexplain it..i got the feeling of 4 people coming frm the deepest village of Sweden and dressed up like pop staers..i have a big respect fr their future after the ESC and the catchy music they put out.but this does not mean i have to like them..simply i do nt

@Vincent Barbarino
Have you actually SEEN the 1974 contest? If so, can you honestly tell me wich act that was NOT kitch that year? When it comes to ABBAs costumes one have to take a look at what the British pop/rock elite was wearing back then.. Just think of Marc Bolan & T.Rex,
The Glitter band, Sweet etc etc
Oh the golden 70´s......

i saw the film on thursday, go and see it its very camp, and bjorn and benny have cameo roles in it, it really is a feel good movie that reminds us how great the songs of abba are

Abba was really like the story of two young ok-looking country girls who can sing but who actually dream of becoming housewives meeting their soul mates who are able to compose some very catchy tunes and have an intuition for making money. All four got together, put tones of glitter on them, sang in a mellow-yellowish way english tunes with swedish country smile ans conquered the whole world. This is what it should be about in this musical

i have never really understood how two huswife-typea along with two stubidly and awfull looking ice-men managed to launch such a huge career..i do not deny that they have composed and sung some truly nice dance pop songs..very catchy and with their own distinctive sound..but honestly i think in our days they wouldn't even reach the finals..and i findtheir staging and presentation of waterloo in ESC extremely kitch

Just to confirm, at the London premier of 'Mamma Mia - The Movie' were Bjorn, Benny & Frida, NOT Agnetha - Unfortunatly.

I mean Mina, with all respect that Greek people in Athens (like in every major city in the world) are not very nive compared to the Greeks in little villages. Where they still have time for a customer, where the language of money is not all that important. In Athens, in bars, taverna's and shops, I very often have the impression that people are rude, especially when they hear that I don't sspeak Greek. (I am learning it but it's really difficult, French is my first language and than German). That's all my friend. For the rest I lost my heart to Greece, absolutely adore it. But like I said, when you are here in London, it's very often the same story, you go to Brighton or really up North (Lake District, for example) and people are so different, nicer.

Waterloo was the best song in the 1974 contest. A decent popsong hadn´t won since Poupèe de cire poupèe de son way back in 1965. So it was about time..

'''The people (except for Athens) are so nive''

Do you mean nice or naive?
