The Hellenic cuisine as well as music during the postwar period were significantly enriched by the expelled Greeks who were living in Asia Minor.

This vulgar MIX of western & eastern sounds started to ''expand' from this particular period....

Thus,

GREECE:

Geography outh

Music: Basicaly Western with eastern influences

Cuisine: Mediterranian (the official international term for the Greek cuisine)

Religion: Orthodox (East), depending on different views & interpretations of faith with the Catholic church (West)

Economy:West, 'coz GREECE IS ONE OF THE 20 RICHEST COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

Politics: West

So draw the necessary conclusions from that... THANKS!

By characterizing "eastern" the greek cuisine I mean it's close to the arabic and turkish one and don't tell me it isn't.

And yes, the music of ionian islands is mostly serenades, but if you look at the greek charts nowadays, most greeks listen to laika (although I can't stand them) which are eastern.

Omg would u please stop with the self hatred?!!!
U can call it Mediterranean, southern ect but the fact is that most ppl with “western” mostly mean the countries from Austria and France most south and up 2 Germany, UK, Belgium, Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries and u`re country food, music and religion wise has a little 2 nothing 2 do with this parts of Europe.

Culture, such as art, music, traditions ect aren`t objective stuff, this r subjective and u can`t measure them and compare them as easily as u can with economy, democracy, human rights ect. So when talking about eastern and western culture it`ll be wrong 2 think that one is more superior to the other. But unfortunately that`s how ppl still feel here.

Westerners got the “superiority” complex which makes it even harder 4 them 2 accept that all of the sudden this new “inferior” countries have entered “their” contest and r now even winning it. This can clearly be seen in how many ppl here keep on talking that west doesn`t win anymore and if a western country wins now I`m almost 100% sure that I won`t c so many westerners whining about it here. It won`t be as hard 2 loose 2 an equally “superior” country and many ppl here discreetly throw the word “eastern” around as if it`s an insult.

Easterners on the other hand suffer from en “inferiority” complex. They seem 2 look up 2 west and countries in the middle of east and west will much rather be labeled as west than east, coz being labeled as west is like being member of a VIP club. So I think as soon as ppl stop their self hatred they`ll be more free and they can grow more.

I know I`m generalizing a lot here, but I`m just doing it 2 mark my points. But again while west is more financially strong, more democratic and human rights r better protected there when it comes 2 cultural stuff it`s wrong 2 talk about superior and inferior cultures, that`s almost racist.

And now back 2 Greece. Yes u r both western and eastern. With eastern I don`t mean that u have been under any iron curtain, I`m not talking about politics. I mean geographically, ur historical relations 2 other countries (it was more 2 east than west) and ur culture, such as traditions, food, traditional music ect. Why do u think that Qele Qele is becoming such a hit in Greece and got ur 12points? It wasn`t coz of the small, very small Armenian diaspora there, it`s coz Greece through history has been were close 2 Armenia and Armenians (the Byzantine Empire was were Turkey is now and Armenia was ur the next door neighbor) and their traditional music is close yours. The same with music from Balkan countries. And since this is a music/song contest it`s fair 2 say that music wise/culture wise Greece is more East (again not talking about Politics)

This characterazation has NTH to do with the EAST....
Only with the SOUTH...


GREEK,ITALIAN & SPANISH cuisines are similar to one another & belong to the same category...

I think that some of you here need some serious history and sociology lessons. First of all, to all the people that are trying to locate Greece on the map and who say that it is "East": Greece is geocraphically in Eastern Europe and nobody can challenge that. However, the EUROVISION meaning of the word "East" does not refer to geocraphical location but to culture, economy and politics. It can also be used to describe a group of ex- Yugoslavian and ex-Sovietic countries that started participating in the Eurovision in the last 10-15 years after the fall of communism. Thus, in the Eurovision Greece is West, even if it has formed a strong alliance with fellow Balkan states. On the other hand to all the Greeks here, reacting and saying things like "Greece was the cradle of western civilisation": Please calm down, nobody has insulted you by saying that you are in Eastern Europe! And, it is not right to say that Greece was the country that has created the whole European culture. That is wrong. Greek civilisation has been an important source of inspiration for Scientists, Artists, Writers and Poets. This is due to the fact that behind this civilisation there is rich history, legends and myths. However, in the 21st century many of these things have been forgotten or not used any more. This is because the things that influence our lives today are not Greek myths or classical paintings but instead scientific and technological advances that have started being discovered centuries ago, but in countries such as Italy, France, England, Scandinavia, and lately in the U.S.A too. The greek civilisation's historical value can certainly not be challenged or disputed but it does not mean that everything derives from it. Let's not forget that in the ancient times there have been other civilisations that influenced Europe equally as the Greeks, like the Romans, the Gauls, the Vikings and the Saxons.

GREECE is neither.....WEST or EAST..... it is UNIQUE as is its language and music! Greece was not only the cradle of the western world, but also a spiritual awekening of eastern cultures too! Alexander spread Hellenism in the east and the Romans to the west-do not forget!-
GREECE is the CENTER of the CIVILISED WORLD!
That is why people get confused!
You can feel both East and West in this special kinda land.... that nearly every culture has crossed its paths and sailed its waters.... and left its marks....
come down Xevus..... and see for your self...
