Party time in Belgrade
Iceland: All night long with Denmark
TV reporter and ex-Miss Iceland Ragnhildn Bjornsdottit (Selma's sister) viewed the show from the VIP seats in front of the commentary box and screamed with delight as Iceland went through to the final for the first time since 2004.
Simon Matthew, this years singer from Denmark, who is staying in the same hotel as Euroband, was also warmly congratulated as he returned in the pouring rain and celebrated the first all-Nordic final since 2000, when Denmark won with the Olson Brothers. Euroband celebrated with a crate of champagne and although the performers went to bed at 2.30, the Icelandic and Danish delegates stayed and celebrated in true Nordic style until 5.00am.
UK entrant Andy Abraham and French entrant Sebastien Teller, extended their own congratulations and looked forward to being joined by the band on Saturday. Andy expressed his astonishment that Switzerland failed to qualify.

MOR VE OTESI (TURKEY) - DELI
GO TURKEY.....
good luck iceland from the u.k
Ben Gray
I agree. I have always thought Andy was by far the best singer on the X Factor (a sleazy programme I can't stand-and deserves Eurovision's bad reputation!), and I thought they should of called off the search on the first night. I have always wanted hime to sing for us too!
But to stay on topic, I really like the Icelandic entries usually, and after an overlong (and medioce) national final, and Euroband were always the best! Good luck!
Denmark have a decent song, but lacks a chorus, perhaps getting too repetative. However, I was suprised by his performance, especally after the over the top entries (like Bulgaria), and it also has good camerawork.
Switzerland, well, had a great song with potential to win, but on the night I thought he sounded strained and struggling. The dancers were also a little distracting, but I still like the song.
The night is here! Enjoy!
I really cross my fingers for you Iceland, the song it fantastic and the singers are proff. I'd love to see the next ESC from Iceland, you really deserve it this year!
IF not Iceland.... Then maybe Portugal, Sweden or Ukraine.
Anyway good luck to all!!
There's a mistake in the article!
Ragnhildur Steinunn, the TV presented and former miss Iceland is NOT Selma's sister.
However, the two women who choreograph the Icelandic entry this year are both Selma's sisters.
I've put money down on Portugal or Iceland to win! Portugal has some surprisingly long odds of 25/1 where I placed my bet, and Iceland even longer at 80/1. It's the first time I've ever placed a bet on something before, I only put down a few pounds on each, but I would win an amount significant to myself should Iceland or Portugal take the top spot!
Now that I know the line up, I want either;
Reykjavik 2009
Lisbon 2009
Warsaw 2009
Oslo 2009, or of course
London 2009
Good luck to all countries tonight, may the best and most deserving song and country win.
I'll take this final opportunity to ask that you please do not write off the British song. If you genuinely don't like it, don't vote for it. However, this is a big improvement compared to previous years for us and as such I hope for a justified result, which will encourage better songs from us in the future. I am proud of Andy and I trust him to deliver a stellar performance. I was very disappointed when he didn't win The X Factor, and now the man I thought had it is using it to represent his country with a song that is truly his and not written with Eurovision in mind. I don't expect us to win, I just want a justified result.
It's better than some has-been in a grass skirt going "WOO!" at the very least, right?
Cool article.
Just want to point out that it's The <b>Olsen</b> brothers, not Olson. *<i>Shrugs</i>*
The Danish song has grown on me, but I voted for Portugal.
But both my younger bro's voted for Denmark.
Can see why, though.
I kinda liked teh Swiss one and the guy was really cute, but eh. I'm not fond of the Swedish song at all. That woman scares me, and just about anyone I've talked to.
I'm sure she might be a very nice lady, but she's so thin and her legs just look so fragile and...
But I wish all the Scandinavian countries good luck, along with Portugal and Armenia (<i>which song I do really love</i>
.
Great article, really enjoyed reading this. Thanks!
Iceland had the best and most confident performance on the night, along with Portugal, Denmark, Ukraine, Albania, FYROM, Turkey, and Cyprus. The result was fair, however I would have liked to see Cyprus, or Bulgaria, or Fyrom, or switzerland qualifying instead of Latvia (really bad song!) and Georgia. While in the first semi final I would have liked to see Holland qualifying instead of Finland.
Anyway I guess tomorrow there will be a tight competition between Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, and portugal!, followed by Sweden, Iceland, and Greece.
Well the text would partially at least have to be from Paul Oscar (this is my life) - the gay-emance-ploy...but very strong....
Good song.
@ Hoffa: Thanks.
I was wondering.
I wish them both best of luck! They are very charming performers and Iceland is one of my favourite ESC countries. But I'm not sure yet who I will vote for this evening. But fingers are crossed for a Top Ten Finish!
Denmark this year is the only song I like!
Iceland earned every second of their three minutes in the final, it was a coordinated, confident performance which lifted the otherwise not-too-intelligent song.
Iceland were quite brilliant it's true!
Iceland gave one of the best performances last night - simply great. I loathe Denmark's song, but he did it well.
@Little Imp: Fridrik and Regina are not a couple, that was a friendly kiss at the end.
I'm sooooo happy Iceland finally made it through.
I've never liked the song and especially Friðrik but now I've accepted both
Are Fridrik and Regina a couple or was that a friendly kiss of joy at the end of the second semi?
Iceland were just amazing last night. They clearly love Eurovision so much, and just loved being on the stage.
I can't wait to see them perform again on Saturday.
Iceland 12 points from UK---the best
"Andy expressed his astonishment that Switzerland failed to qualify."???? Obviously Andy didn't hear the Swiss sing their song yesterday..I'm reall sorry, but it sounded terrible!
WoW, their song and performance rules!!
they can win actually, but if not they can be on the top5, top 10 for sure!! : )
Iceland deserve to be top 3 this year
Sympathetic??? Makes it sound like they've saved rainforests or something.
Great performance from Iceland - good luck !!!
Iceland is the best this year, well....Portugal too deserves to win, but Iceland performance was great!!! Powerful voices and i also like the way they move on the stage, the way they dance and look at the camera
ICELAND WILL BE PROBABLY THE WINNER.
