2005 entrant meets French fans

France: Ortal - "Eurovision was the best thing in my life so far"

Last Sunday, 20th April, members of OGAE France got together in Paris and voted for their favourite 2008 songs (results published last Tuesday on esctoday.com). Guest of honour of the afternoon was Ortal, France's 2005 representative.

Always smiling and pleasant to talk with, Ortal answered questions on her Eurovision experience. "I was not happy at all with how the performance was filmed by the organisers but also about the way I have been supported by my record company" she said - or more precisely "not supported!". "It was not possible for me to have the designer I wanted, for instance, and when I saw how some other teams were very well prepared, this is no big surprise for me to have scored so badly". "There was no PR machine behind me. But I must admit I was not mature enough to have my say. Anyway, this remains one of the best things in my life so far. First of all, because it's a victory, as I won the selection thanks to the French viewers. Secondly because I had a great time in Kiev, especially with the Spanish and Israeli teams. The Belarussian diva was very funny too!". "I also met Gülseren, who represented Turkey and with whom I have made some cabaret acts in France ". she remembers.

Which song did Ortal like the most ? "Greece was a winner for me  from the first time I heard  and saw the performance. Because of the song, of the singer and of the way it was presented".Will Ortal do it again ? "Yes, I will but with so many things to change". What is Ortal doing right now ? "I took a long time out of the business after this. But I have new material now and an album will soon be ready, with songs in French, in English and a few in Spanish and Hebrew. I don't think I will try and "sell" them to a record company as it has become very hard to do the job that way. I am more impatient to come on stage and sing my songs".

What's Ortal's opinion on this year's French entry and on the fact it's in English ? "Singing in English shows you are open-minded but French remains a very musical language. As for Tellier's song, I think this is average, with no big potential. I'm a bit disappointed. It should have been crazier".

I loved this song in 2005, and I got pretty disappointed that France finished second from the last!

"Chacun pense a soi" is a beautiful song, the only song from that year on my iPod. And her perfomance wasn't any stranger or worse than the average performance of, let's say, FYR Macedonia or Russia.

I'm a bit disapointed that she's not supporting this year french entry that much... i love this year french entry, puts me in a very good mood, i think it has a great positive vibe :)

She sounds like great fun, and very honest to herself. Not many artists say to themselves that they deserved to do badly, most singers are too stuck up, but Ortal sounds very honest. :) Personally I think her song was very under-rated in 2005, along with the UK and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

(I love it when she says that this years French entry should have been "crazier!" ;)

Good luck to France from the UK!! :)

I love Ortal.... And her song in 2005 was my favourite.
What a shame that she finished so low.... :(

France was my 2nd favourite in 2005. I agree it was viciously overlooked by everyone.

That said, I hope she burned that yellow dress immediately afterwards.

I hope France will be conservative next year, and send something like they did in 2001 and 2002! I do like there entry this year though.

What was all that armwaving during the song, Oral? Well, not one of my favs from France to be honest, but surely a likeable person....if only she were as good-looking as Jonatan Cerrada lol.

It was a very good entry but her performance on the night su... big time, and I am French, so entitled to say so.

I believe her that Eurovision was the best thing in her life and I also agree with her that the French song this year is a bore but so was hers. One of the worst songs from France ever, a perfectly deserved failure an unworthy entry to perform in the last spot!
Please France, get back to the years of class by sending entries like Natasha, Sandrine...

I really liked Ortal probably the most inderrated song in 2005 along with the UK. However, I disagree that it is the best French entry of recent years when they have sent the sensational Divine this year and the crazy Les Fatal Picards last year

I love her and i agree with everything she said. She's right. She was not supported and her perfomance was not good.
I liked her a lot in the national selection prior to Eurovision.

Please Ortal come back to Eurovision :-)
