"Europe is an important market"

Italy: Maestro Tempera calls Italy back to Eurovision

In a recent interview, Vince Tempera, orchestra conductor at the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest (for Malta) and member a of the Sanmarinese committee that will select their first representative for the European contest next Tuesday, called Italy to come back to the competition.

Vince Tempera, a 62 year old musician, composer, talent scout and orchestra director, was a guest in yesterday’s morning news TG2 show on the Italian Broadcaster RAI network to comment on the participations of San Marino and Switzerland in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Although Italy has not participated since 1997, when Jalisse were the last representatives for the country, this year there is high interest as the Italian language won’t be absent and San Marino will make it's debut.

In the introduction video there was a reference to the  similarities of the Swiss song Era stupendo, selected internally by the Swiss Broadcaster and performed by Paolo Meneguzzi and It can only get better of Amy Diamond, Melodifestivalen 2008 wildcard; Tempera admitted that there are similarities in some notes of the songs; he commented that nowadays many pop songs are very similar and it was not plagarism.

Maestro Tempera retained that a participation in the Eurovision Song Contest is very important, he referred to Toto Cutugno and his victory in 1990 and how that victory made him known to the European public. This week, the former winner took fourth place in the San Remo festival, ahead of Swiss Eurovision hopeful Paulo Meneguzzi.

This year Tempera will be part of the Sanmarinese committee to select the first participant for the microstate and he called on Italy to come back to the Eurovision Song Contest, as Europe is an important market and there will be some financial benefits for the country by exporting the Italian music.

Italy - you are well out it these days.

You got out at the right time. The question is - who will be next out of the Exit door?

Italy has entered some of my all time favourite ESC songs. In the past they've felt that their songs have not done as well as they should have - under the current 'vote for your neighbour/former imperial master' ESC I see no reason why their entries would be justly rewarded by votes. Sad as it is to say - I think Italy has made the right decision

It's my dream to have Italy back in ESC. Last year I sent an e-mail to RAI in order to argue with them for their decision to stay out since 1997.How disappointing it is!
Maybe the SanRemo's failure will bring Rai back in the European Contest..European market is bigger than Italian so far..
RAI makes up your mind!!!!please :P

I doubt RAI would want to return to an ESC full of freak acts such a turkey puppet or a mad with a chicken...

I do kind of see San Marino as Italy's understudy for this year but it would still be great to have Italy back in the contest, along with Austria, Slovakia and Monaco.

I really think though that there should still be 10 guaranteed places in the final - the big four (five if Italy came back) plus last year's top five. However, that way the two semi finals would be even shorter. Maybe last year's top 3 instead?

It gives more incentive for the other countries in my opinion, because it's final every year for the big four/five and all or nothing for everyone else. Only since this new format change does that become more obvious.

Oh yes definitely... I prefer every country to sing in its own language. On that I agree completely!

I adore Finnish and Icelandic and would be curious to listen Georgian or Armenian :)

I would love it if Italy came back to the contest. But since the language rule was abolished we have had songs in ESC sung in italian, so I haven´t really missed them.

@Fabian
Italian is in Italian. Why would we need an English entry from Italy just like we have an English entry from Germany ?

This information about France is still a rumour. No confirmation yet though it would make me happy if it appeared to be true. Other rumours say it could be Tina Arena. So still a lot of speculations.

These information comes from French Magazine website Les Inrockuptibles: url=http://www.lesinrocks.com/index.php?id=60&tx_news%5Bnotule%5D=208176&cHash=e5436e6470]http://www.lesinrocks.com/index.php?id=60&tx_news%5Bnotule%5D=208176&cHash=e5436e6470/url]

Italy would be foolish to come back with the current voting system. They'd be severely handicapped, just as Spain, Malta, France etc are.

I do not agree with you, but I understand your meaning.
Culture is something moving and evolving exactly as societies and people are mving and changing.

Italian "cultural" music? What should it be? Tarantella? Napoletan Melodramatic Romantic? or Bozener Mountaneer Yoddle?

Italy is ide and e are a lot of different people and culture.. all this plus modern influences and a great need and desire to be part of the World... Italian music is Laura Pausini as Eros Ramazzotti, but also new bands like Subsonica, Negramaro or Fabri Fibra and Nesli...

Is Culture necessarily Tradition?
I am not sure... For me Culture is a Wonderful Mix.

Italy should be part of it!

Why would Italy have to come back as long European culture is absent in the ESC ? This year there is no German entry either.
If Europe can do without German Europe can also do without Italian.
