New Year's Eve swansong

Veterans Novi Fosili split

Novi Fosili, the Croatian pop band who represented the former Yugoslavia in the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest, have announced that their New Year’s Eve Concert on Zagreb’s main square was their last.

The concert lasted for 90 minutes, and was the first time the group had performed on Zagreb's main square, as they have always played at indoor venues in the past.

Singer and composer Rajko Dujmić said: "The plan was for an intimate event, for adults to relive their best years, and for children to hear, perhaps, the songs which were played whilst they were conceived! There was never a financial motive - I just think it would be impolite not to bid farewell to our faithful public with song."

The group was formed in Zagreb in 1969. In 1976, their hit from the Splitski Festival, Diridonda soon became a hit throughout Yugoslavia. They then released several albums which sold millions of copies.Their next several albums sold millions of copies, some of which have become evergreens. Since 1984 Sanja Doležal had been the group's female vocalist.. The group's male vocalists were Vladimir Kočiš Zec and Rajko Dujmić. Some of their hits include: Za dobra stara vremena (For the  good old times), Milena, Djece sreće, Tonka, Ej moj Saša and Sanja, in which Rajko sings of his love for a girl who is one centimetre taller than he is! 'Oh, my Sanja, if you were a little bit shorter'.

In 1987 the band represented Yugoslavia at the Eurovision Song Contest. With their song Ja sam za ples/I Wanna Dance they reached fourth place.

In 2005 they released a best-of double CD called Za dobra stara vremena (For the good old times) after one of their most popular hits, and held sell-out concerts in Zagreb, Belgrade and Ljubljana. Sanja Doležal hosted her own chat show on the Croatian RTL channel from its launch in 2004 until 2006, and was often moved to tears by the heart wrenching stories of some of the show’s guests.

Vladimir Kočiš gained his nickname Zec (Rabbit) due to his running skills as a child, and Rajko Dujmić is known as Lima (an inversion of mali, meaning little) due to his height of just 170cm. He has battled with alcohol in recent years. In 1989, Rajko Dujmić composed the winning entry for Yugoslavia in the Eurovision Song Contest, Rock Me by the group Riva. The lead singer Emilija Kokić will take part in this year’s Croatian national Eurovision Song Contest pre-selection Dora.

hi Goran,
I just can't help myself joking on the news but your explanations are very interesting. In fact, it's so different from news about artists and pleasant comments on their story. We sometimes need to know more about the "dark side" of people... por, let's say, more of the truth about their real talent.

Dominique Dufaut,

surprisingly enough, I happen to agree with you. :-))

Novi Fosili’s first line-up (until 1983, with late Durdica Barlovic as a main vocalist) was bye far THE BEST.
They were real cultural pop-instituion.

When Durdica left in 1983, and Sanja joined, it wasn’t the same band anymore.
Although most people would consider Sanja’s time (1983-1991) to be their "golden age", I personally disagree. All their songs were like "Ja sam za ples". They were popular, extremely popular, but no quality at all.... And Sanja can’t even sing.

Even the third line-up (1993-2001), with two female vocalists, was better (not very popular, thouh).

I hope my reaction won't be taken too seriously... but, to my opinion, they should have split before the 1987 contest !!!

Novi fosili were great back in the 80's, with Sanja at the mike. Great songs, great image. It was good to have them back at least for a short while.

SORRY, the third line-up was formed in 1993, not in 2003.
My mistake!

Laura.... wrong!

This (second) line-up of Novi Fosili split in 1991, and not now!

In 2003 new (third) line-up was formed, with two female vocalist, and they took part in several Croatian finals from 1996 to 2001.
Meanwhile, members from the second line-up Sanja Dolezal and Vladimir Kocis persued their own solo carear.

The last (third) line-up of Novi Fosili split in 2001, and their fairwell song was "Takva ljubav" from Dora 2001.

The second line-up recently made a short come-back, just to earn some extra money from their old fame. Nothing else. They didnt produce any new song in this period.

So, it is wrong to say thay have only now split.
