Biography
Hard to imagine a person in Ukraine’s population of 48 million who wouldn’t know Olexandr Ponomaryov. And this is no surprise – since Olexandr has been 7 (!!!) times voted best singer of Ukraine. And this is out of 12 possible years of Ukraine as an independent state!
>From his early childhood, Olexandr displayed numerous gifts. One of his early passions was boxing. Ponomaryov could make a brilliant career as a boxer. However, Olexandr started to loose his eyesight, and doctors forbade him to go in for this kind of sports.
Olexandr appeared at the crossroads: what to take up next? And suddenly music whirled into his life. To put it precisely, Olexandr always enjoyed singing, but he never thought of music as his main walk of life. Nevertheless, he decided to take the risk and submitted an application to a musical college. Everything could be fine, but there was one impediment: Ponomaryov was unfamiliar with notation in music. He had not acquired any musical education. Even so, professors, who were amazed by the strength and beauty of his voice, made him a conditional offer: Olexandr had to master the 7 years’ curriculum of the musical school in one year. And Ponomaryov coped with it!
Since 1992, Olexandr has taken part in dozens of Ukrainian and international festivals. Sometimes the mere fact of him wanting to participate in a musical contest would mean that everybody knew the winner in advance. Olexandr’s musical crusade, besides winning the “Singer of the Year” award for 7 times, led him to universal recognition and popularity in Ukraine. He toured extensively throughout the country with solo concerts, selling all tickets out months before the actual performance. In 1998, Olexandr received the government’s recognition by obtaining the title of “Honored Artist of Ukraine”. This meant that his songs were well known in places where music is rarely heard – government offices. How many fans Olexandr obtained in there, still remains a mystery.
Olexandr is determined to try his best to successfully present himself and his country at the Eurovision Song Contest. “God willing” – he keeps saying – “my song will become popular in Europe. It is a great honor for me to be the first Ukrainian performer to sing at this great European festival”.
