Biography

Denmark is represented by a 20-year-old music student, Malene Winther Mortensen. Young singer Malene was a perfectly ordinary schoolgirl until she signed up for the TV-show "Star for a night" and came second. With the song "Tell me who you are" she won the Danish Melodi Grand Prix.

Malene was a perfectly ordinary schoolgirl until she signed up for the TV-show "Star for a night", a songcontest on TV for amateurs and lost her anonymity on the spot. She came second, and when DR TV started scouting for entries for the Danish national songcontest Malene was an obvious choice for one of the songs.

She won an overwhelming victory with Michael Ronson’s "Tell Me Who You Are" but despite the massive attention and a flood of invitations to perform at venues all over the country, Malene has put her school work first and since her triumph in the songcontest she has been working hard to complete her studies at one of Denmark’s most highly reputed music high schools. Immediately after the Eurovision Songcontest in Estonia she will go back to do her final exams. After the summer she hopes to move on to conservatoire to study singing.

Malene comes from a musical family. Her father is a well-known jazz player, and her mother, whom she lost a few years ago, was the drummer in one of the leading female rock groups in Denmark in the 1980s. Malene was often taken to her mum’s gigs when she was a kid and she is sure she has inherited her great pleasure and interest in music from her mother.

Malene’s song "Tell me who you are" was written by Danish-Romanian Michael Ronson, or Mircea Romcescu as he’s called in Romanian. He studied at the Bucharest conservatoire and has won songwriting contests in Romania, Denmark and the USA. "Tell me who you are" is his third entry in the Danish national songcontest but the first of his songs to actually win. Michael Ronson has lived in Denmark since 1985 but spent his childhood and youth in Romania. When he was 17 his father gave him a guitar and music has taken up most of his life ever since. As well as writing music he plays the violin, piano, guitar, double bass and percussion. He sings too, as the Eurovision Songcontest audience in Tallinn will see, as Michael Ronson is in the group providing Malene’s backing vocals.
