Biography
Fabrizio Faniello was born on the 27th of April, 1981. As a young boy, Fabrizio was always involved in music and singing, taking part in festivals for young talent in which he always did very well. His singing talent continued flourishing within Maltese musicals in which her performed. He is also a talented sportsman, being very active in Football, and the MFA (Malta Football Association).
In 1998, he sang the song "More than just a game", written by Paul Abela and Georgina with which he placed second in the Maltese Song for Europe festival of that year and also performed it in the festival Bratislava Lyra where he won that festival with the same song. That year, he was also selected among 15,000 candidates in the auditions of Castro caro, a highly scrupulous process of selection of young talent in Italy, from where prestigious Italian singers like Zucchero, Jovanotti and Eros Ramazzotti emerged. He was also nominated for and won the award of best male singer in the Maltese Music Awards of that Year. Subsequently, Fabrizio took part in other festivals, both in Malta and overseas, including Italy, Czech Republic and Kazakstan. He also won the FIDOF award for the best promising young talent.
The year after, Fabrizio also won the International Festival of Maltese Song with the Song "Sa l-ahhar" written by Ray Agius and Alfred C. Sant. The following year, he also performed in a festival held in Kazakstan where he placed 2nd and won the Radio award. He also participated again with the song "Change of heart" (written by Paul Abela and Georgina) in the Maltese Song For Europe festival 2000 in which he placed 2nd . With the same song he performed in a festival in Prague where he won the FIDOF award for the best interpretation.
Fabrizio's singing career includes credits in musical theatre such as Les Miserables in concert, Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat and Fiddler on the roof. He performs all around Malta in night clubs, in concerts and is now a very successful Maltese TV personality. Now that he has won the Maltese Song For Europe festival 2001 with the song "Another summer night" (written by Paul Abela and Georgina) he will now represent Malta with this song in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Georgina Abela started singing at a very young age, taking part in children's festivals always achieving prestigious placing. Her singing career started with Heavy Metal and Rock Bands. In 1985 she took part in a TV show for new talent which gave her the exposure she needed to spark her fame. She started a solo career as a singer taking part in Festivals and singing in clubs all over Malta, side by side the composer, musician, musical director and husband, Paul Abela whom she married in 1986.
Internationally, she has participated in many festivals, namely the Mediterranean Song Festival in Antalya Turkey, Prague Song Festival and Cesme Song Festival where she placed 3rd. In 1991 she won the Maltese Song for Europe Festival as a duet with Paul Giordimaina with the song "Could it be", written by Paul Abela with which they placed 6th at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Italy. In 1992 Georgina also co-write the song "Little child" (sung by Mary Spiteri) which placed 3rd at the Eurovision Song Contest of that year which was held in Sweden. Other encounters with the Eurovision Song Contest include the participation as backing vocalist in the song "In a woman's heart" in 1996.
Georgina performed in numerous concerts in Malta as well as in Canada, Australia, Italy, Korea and other countries. She was also the leading role in some of the most well known musicals in Malta, some of them written by her husband Paul. She has always participated in local festivals as singer and songwriter, writing lyrics for hit songs of the local market and festivals, including the song "More than just a game". This song whose music was written Paul and which was sung by Fabrizio Faniello, won the Festival of Bratislava Lyra in 1998. She has now written the lyrics for yet another song written by her husband Paul; the song "Another summer night" which is also sung by Fabrizio Faniello and which won the Maltese Song for Europe Festival 2001 and therefore, will represent Malta yet again, this time as lyricist, in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Paul Abela was born on the 1st March 1954. He started studying music at a very young age, mainly playing the accordion, organ and piano. In 1967 he joined the Maltese band New Cuorey, with whom he remained for eleven years, producing musical hits for the local market. In 1978, Paul went to Boston, U.S. to obtain a degree in music at the Berklee College of Music.
He graduated from Berklee in 1981 after which he returned to Malta where he resumed his composing. His breakthrough came when he composed the acclaimed musical "Gensna", the most successful Maltese musical based upon the story of the Maltese people. After, he started composing songs for Maltese festivals and in this period he also represented Malta in festivals as a composer and as a conductor in Poland, Prague, Bratislava, Turkey, Yugoslavia and Korea. In 1986 he married the Maltese singer Georgina and together they gave concerts in Australia and Canada, besides taking part in many festivals both in Malta and abroad.
Paul's career expanded to the further production of other Maltese musicals and in the meantime, representing Malta as a composer, arranger and conductor in the Eurovision Song Contest with the songs: "Could it be" in 1991 (sung by Georgina and Paul Giordimaina) placing 6th, "Little child" in 1992 (sung by Mary Spiteri) placing 3rd and "In a woman's heart" in 1996 (sung by Miriam Christine Borg). He also was musical director for the productions of various musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, The sound of music, Evita, Annie, Les Miserables in concert, Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat, La cage aux folles, Anything goes, Seven brides for seven brothers and Fiddler on the roof. He has also produced and conducted concerts for Orchestra, Big Band, and for TV. He has arranged for and conducted bands and written music for TV series. In 1998, his song "More than just a game" (sung by Fabrizio Faniello) won the festival of Bratislava Lyra. Paul has just won the Maltese Song For Europe festival with the song "Another summer night" (sung by Fabrizio Faniello) with which he will once again represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest.
