Biography
Michelle (Courtens) is nineteen years old and chock full of talent. A bright career lies ahead of her. She had a solid victory on the Dutch Song Contest in Rotterdam with the song "Out on my own".
The central themes of the song are freedom and independence. Michelle recently moved out of her parents’ house into a flat of her own in Amsterdam. This personal step toward independence inspired the song, which was written by André Remkes and Dirk Jan Vermeij.
At the age of four Michelle started playing the violin. Four years later she had mastered the instrument so well she tried her hand at cello. In 1998 Michelle took a preparatory course at the conservatory of The Hague. In August 1999 she was admitted to the Amsterdam conservatory where she is now studying singing.
André Remkes and Dirk Jan Vermeij wrote "Out on my own". They were inspired to write the song, whose main theme is freedom and independence, for the young singer Michelle when she recently decided to move away from home.
André Remkes has composed music for various children’s CD-ROMs and for a disc containing information on different European cities. He was involved in several video productions.
Dirk Jan Vermeij has recorded a number of albums with his band "I Travel" and is currently working on a range of musical projects.
