The six songs that reached the final were performed live again. The voting system was different than in the semi finals: it was time for the "good old" eight regional juries and the additional expert jury.
Stjórnin were the clear winners of the final (although they had to perform second!), receivng almost twice the amount of points the runner-up did. Otherwise, the juries in the final hardly agreed with the jury in the semi finals: For example, Helga Möller's entry, that narrowly qualified from third position in the second semi final finished second overall.
Stjórnin are Sigriđur Beinteinsdóttir and Grétar Örvarsson. Both has already taken part in Icelandic national finals: Sigriđur was a backing singer for Eyjólfur Kristjánsson in 1987 while Grétar finished 7th in 1988, performing a duet with Gigja Sigurđardóttir.

Iceland has completely changed the way to select the Eurovision Song Contest entry. The most obviuos change was probably the fact that two semi finals were held with six songs competing each. The top three, chosen by a jury consisting of 60 people in the audience, would move forward to the final.

Some singers that already tried to qualified the week before returned to the stage for the second semi final: Björgvin Halldórsson won the heat and would therefore be the only singer with two songs in the final. Stjórnin, who won the first semi final, narrowly missed out this time finishing 4th.
Helga Möller already had had eyperience in the Eurovision Song Contest: in 1986, she represented Iceland on its debut with the group ICY.
