Biography

Anneli Saaristo's repertoire ranges from jazz and chanson to pop. She has made 7 solo albums and contributed to others, some for children. A popular performer on radio, TV and the stage, she also tours widely. In 1983 she was voted female vocalist of the year by Finland's music industry, and won the Finnish Musicians Union award. The same year she was chosen best singer of the international Knokke Cup in Be!gium. She won the Grand Prix at Rostock in 1985 and second prize in Dresden in 1987. The secret of Anneli Saaristo's success lies in her powerful yet sensitive voice and her spirited, emotional interpretation.

Anneli is backed by Spanish guitar-players Antti Jakoila and Bert Karlsson.

Matti Puurtinen began playing the guitar in dance bands at 15 before taking up piano and organ. He studied at Jyväskylä Conservatory 1970-1975 and musicology at the University of Jyväskylä. Conductor at Turku City Theatre 1975-1979, he then turned to freelance composing, arranging, conducting and performing. He has composed music for 25 plays, radio and TV, and played jazz, produced works and arrangements for symphony orchestras and conducted light music concerts by Finland's city orchestras. 50 of his 200 songs have been recorded. He has been working with Saaristo as accompanist, composer and conductor.

The lyricist, Turkka Mali. is a student of pedagogics and made his first record in 1978. Married with 4 children and lives in a farmhouse in the country. In addition to composing he plays piano, guitar and bass.

Ossi Runne has been conductor and trumpet soloist with the Radio Dance Band and since 1965 conductor with TV1. For 23 years he has conducted the orchestra accompanying Finland's Eurovision singer. [Notes from the Official 1989 programme]
