Biography
Both Umberto Tozzi and Raf were popular singers in Italy and the rest of Europe before they entered the Eurovision Song Contest this year.
Umberto Tozzi is the best known of the two, as he scored two big hits at the end of the 70's in Europe with the songs Ti Amo and Gloria. Laura Branigan took an English version of the last song into the UK charts in the early 80's.
Raf´s full name is Raf Riefoli. In his own country he is known for his renditions of Italian songs, but it was an English song in 1984 that brought him to the attention of the rest of Europe, Self Control. Once again however it was Laura Branigan who took the song high into the UK charts and the charts of various other European countries. Raf should not be confused with the other Italian Raf that scored some minor hits at the start of the 90's in the UK. This is a producer called Mauro Picotto.
Both Umberto Tozzi and Raf worked with songwriter Giancarlo Bigazzi before. He also wrote the Italian entries for 1971 and 1973.
