Biography
Carlos do Carmo is arguably the greatest living exponent of the traditional Portuguese music form the Fado. Recently the Fado has been subjected to quite an amount of commercial exploitation - Carlos resents this exploitation and is doing all he can to bring it back to its original purity. Carlos does not only sing Fado, he is an excellent interpreter of the songs of Jacques Brel and he also sings many of the songs made famous by Sinatra.
The composers, José Niza and Manuel Alégre, are deeply involved in politics - both are secretaries of the Socialist party in the constituent assembly.
The shamrock, believe it or not, gets a mention in this song. The line is "there's no hope, no wheat, no shamrock, no words for the song to be sung." [From the RTÉ commentary]
