Biography
Romuald already appeared in the 1964 contest for Monaco and this is his second time. He would appear again for Monaco in the 1974 contest.
Paul Mauriat (born in Marseille) is one of the famous names in this year's contest. He first gathered fame, when Petula Clark recorded his Chariot in 1962, one of several French songs she did. Even more popular became this song, when it was translated as I Will Follow Him and was a US no. 1 hit in 1963 for Little Peggy March and a Dutch no. 1 hit in 1982 for José, ex-member of the successful girl group Luv'. Paul didn't use his own name for the song, though, but a writer's pseudonym Del Roma. In the course of this success he wrote more songs for other people. But he was a recording artist in his own right too. His moment of fame came, when his instrumental version of Vicky Leandros' 1967 Eurovision entry charted all around the world in the spring of 1968 as L'Amour Est Blue (Love Is Blue), even becoming the US no. 1, making this his first US no. 1 as a recording star and his second altogether. Blooming Hits, the album that also featured an instrumental version of Sandie Shaw's Puppet On A String hit the no. 1 spot in the US album charts. Paul wasn't quite able to follow up his big hit. Love In Every Room and Chitty Chitty Bang made a dent in the US charts as did some of his subsequent albums, but they were far from big successes. Paul Mauriat returned to writing songs for other people and Cathérine was his effort to make his own Eurovision success instead of recording his version of an already existing Eurovision song. In the mid-70's Paul Mauriat almost charted in his own right again, as his El Bimbo slowly crept up some European playlists.
