Biography

Karel Gott (born Karel Gottar 14/07/39 in Pilsen in Czechoslovakia), "die goldene Stimme aus Prag" (the golden voice from Prague) started his singing career in his native country in 1963. It was not long before his fame spread over Czechoslovakia's borders and in 1967 he had his first engagement in Las Vegas. In the same year he released his first song in German, Weißt Du Wohin. Strange enough this song became his first hit in Germany a year later, months after Karel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest with Tausend Fenster. Hits like Was Damals war, Das Mädchen aus Athen and Lago Maggiore followed. More than a singles artist, Karel released albums covering everything from operetta to a soundtrack for the children's series Die Biene Maja. In recent years he had a hit with a German version of Gerard Joling's No More Bolero's, Nie Mehr Bolero and introduced a lot of young Czech artists to the German public.

Udo Jürgen Bockelmann of course was the Austrian singer Udo Jürgens who participated three consecutive years for Austria in the contest, before finally winning the contest with Merci Chérie in 1966.
