Biography
Kathy Kirby (born in 1940) started her career as part of Ambrose & his Orchestra, an orchestra that played 30's, 40's and 50's standards. Although she appeared solo before, it was her appearance on the Stars And Garters variety show in the early-60's that made her solo career really take off. The first pay-off came in 1963 with her vocal version of The Shadows' UK no. 1 Dance On. Later in the year she reached the top 10 with her version of the 1954 Doris Day UK no. 1 Secret Love, a version that eventually stalled at no. 4 in the UK. Early the next year she hit the UK top 10 again, this time with the Teresa Brewer song Let Me Go, Lover! from 1955. Another hit followed in the guise of You're The One, her first original that sadly missed out on the top 10. Dance On, Secret Love and You're The One incidentally were produced by Charles Blackwell, the conductor for the entry of Luxembourg in the 1974 contest. Although I Belong was successful on the UK EP charts (it hit no. 9), it didn't do very much on the singles charts. It also effectively ended Kathy's run of chart hits. She remained successful for a time as presenter of her Kathy Kirby Sings series. But then fate struck and her life became a continuous run of ups and downs.
