Biography
France Gall (born in 1947) started her singing career at the tender age of 15. Her first EP, the main format at the time in France, was Ne Sois Pas Si Bête. It sold heavily in her native France. Her second EP featured the first song written for her by Serge Gainsbourg, N'Écoute Pas Les Idoles, and Serge continued to write at least one song per EP 'til 1968. After Sacré Charlemagne was the hit of the year 1964 in France, she was chosen to represent Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest. Poupée De Cire, Poupée De Son was France's first international hit and would (except for her Belgian hit L'Orage) be the last, 'til she returned to the international charts in 1980 with Il Jouait Du Piano Debout. The next year saw her teaming up with Elton John on Les Aveux. 7 years later she returned to the international charts once again, this time with a decidedly more mature sound. Although Ella Elle L'A was a hit in many European charts, this proved to be her last international success. She remains very popular in the French speaking countries.
France Gall was the goddaughter of Serge Gainsbourg. He (born Lucien Ginzburg on 02-03-'28 in Paris) trained as an art teacher, before he started his career in 1950 as a rehearsal pianist, musical assistant and somewhat later as a composer and actor. Encouraged in 1957 to sing one of his own compositions, he discovered his ability to do so. Soon afterwards people like Juliette Greco and Christa Paffgren (Velvet Underground's Nico) started recording his songs. It wasn't however until France Gall's success with her Eurovision winner that Serge Gainsbourg achieved fame outside the French speaking countries.
