My story

Benjamin Doyle

Hi All,

I've been watching the Eurovision Song Contest for as long as I can remember. The first contest I remember is Zagreb in 1990, and all those times that Ireland won in the 1990's.

Since 2000, I have liked most of the winners' songs, but (for the first time in 2008) I just didn't get the winning (Dima Bilan's) song, and although I understood why it won, I think it's telling why the UK, Iceland, Denmark etc. didn't give it any points; we just didn't like it or the performance! Possibly this is why the ESC has descended into a East vs. West arguement of late? We just don't get the East's taste in music, just like the East doesn't get the West's taste in music! ;-)

Anyhoo, I would have preferred Ani Lorak with Shady Lady to win out of the top contenders, but my personal favourite in 2008 was VĂ¢nia Fernandes with Senhora do Mar. I was glad to see Portugal back in the final!

I'd love to see San Marino back in the contest, although I think they have little chance of winning unless they have a seriously brilliant song, and I'd really like Liechtenstein to come into the ESC fold. Now it has a TV station, my wish may come true!

I am really looking forward to this year's contest, and I think it will be one of the hardest fought contests in recent times. Big4 are sending good singers and good songs, and I hope they will be a force to be reckoned with! I think Turkey could be the No 1 this year, although, I don't particularly care for the song - nothing new from Turkey this year!! I like the UK's song, this year, it's a grower... I saw Jade on TVM for Malta's final, and she has improved immensely in the past week alone! Fingers crossed it will win Europe over!

Manchester 2010 here we come!
